Mobulas and Orcas Expedition
Our beautiful Sea of Cortez is home to many different and exciting migrations of megafauna, including one of our favourites, the Munk’s Pygmy Devil Ray (Mobula munkiana). From April to July, hundreds of thousands of mobulas gather in dense schools. Where there are mobulas, there are killer whales (Orcinus orca). We use dedicated aircraft support to spot our snorkelers and divers onto mobulas and orcas and also whale sharks, blue and fin whales, and much more!
An adult female that must have been in the range of at least 25m (80ft) passed directly underneath the pangas only a couple meters below the surface, so that everyone could see the entire, considerable length of the animal just under their feet. Another female Blue Whale with a newly born calf also came up very close to the pangas, the first calf of the season. Everyone also got to see fin whales and a humpback, as well as all kinds of dolphins that were in the area. "Best day ever" was heard several times as the guests came back to the Gallant Lady to refuel with lunch.

Blue whales. Balaenoptera musculus. One of the most amazing big animals I have ever seen. I’ll never forget the first time I saw one. I was just down from a summer of Alaska trips and had seen a lot of humpback whales. Loads of humpback whales. We were on our way into Ensenada from Guadalupe great white sharks when I saw 2 x 30 foot high “blows” in front of us as we approached the shallow underwater ridge (and feeding ground) off Baja. And then we saw the blue whales. The size was almost unfathomable. The back of the whale just went on and on and on until we saw the tiny dorsal fin at the back. All of a sudden, humpback whales shrank in our perception to being not much more than minnows. It was an experience I will never forget and once I started reading about the winter aggregation of blue whale mommas and calves off Loreto, I became determined to figure out how to share this amazing experience with our guests. Our first Baja Ultimate whale trip on our 116 expedition yacht, Gallant Lady, is just in and as the following videos attest, the experience was stunning.

Gray Whales - San Ignacio Lagoon
There is nothing like the fascinating behavior of the whales in the San Ignacio lagoon. Very often they will approach your panga to be petted and even bring their calves with them. 🐳🐋
#WhaleWednesday Did you know that on average whales can remain submerged for 20 minutes? 🤯
Sperm whales have the most efficient respiratory system, allowing them to spend up to 90 minutes underwater. A Cuvier's beaked whale holds the record of longest stay underwater by a mammal. It lasted for 138 minutes. 🐋
Whales are able to hold their breaths for significantly longer periods compared to most mammals due to the ability to reduce their heart rate and temporarily shut down some organs. Doing this allows them to use oxygen more slowly.
