Masuleh, which is over 3000 feet in altitude in the mountains above the Caspian Sea, is a fascinating and unusual village that is built right into the slope of a mountain and has a unique, purpose-built architectural style where the front yard of each of the houses on the incline is actually the roof of the house below it. The buildings are so tightly packed that there is only room for a maze-like network of stairs and narrow roads connecting each of the structures. In fact, automobiles are not allowed in Masouleh simply because there is no room for them!

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá in Colombia is carved underground in a still functioning salt mine. The subtle lighting pronounces the fourteen Stations of the Cross as you descend into the mine, each station sculpted by a different artist. At the deepest point of the cathedral, 180 meters below the earth’s surface, you encounter the nave and the north and south aisles dominated by the 16m high central cross. The illumination and ex*****on of the work is a tribute to modern techniques and years of work from the miners and artists.

The Rocket Paddle Steamers have been plying Bangladesh’s rivers since the early 20th century. Today there are only four left in service and the paddles are powered by diesel rather than steam.

Head 900km northeast of Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, and you’ll discover the wondrous Ennedi Plateau. Rich red sandstone formations tower more than 100 metres above the Saharan sand, and one of highlights of the area being the ancient pool of water called the Guelta d’Archei. The Guelta is a magnet for hundreds of desert camels and it is home to half a dozen rare dwarf Nile crocodiles.

In an area few travelers know about around Accra, there are dozens of highly-skilled coffin shops that build what are known as fantasy coffins. They are built following a curious tradition of burying people in coffins shaped like everything from lobsters to cell phones and a Bic ballpoint pen. The coffins intended for burial are made from a soft wood and cost about $700. The ones considered works of art and bound for homes and galleries, are made from mahogany. Those can sell for as much as $3,000. Some fantasy coffins are also on display at various museums around the world, like Houston’s National Museum of Funeral History.

The stunning and surreal landscape of the semi-desert of Gareja and the city of Udabno, Georgia. Udabno is famous for its wall paintings dating from the end of the 12th century. Thousand-year-old frescos at Udabno depict such scenes from the Bible like “The Last Supper” and “The Exaltation of the Cross”.
