Another Great ASTC conference is in the books.

This year, host Ontario Science Center had a different format for the Exhibits Walking Workshop. We assisted them in running creative design exercises with the session attendees. Their theme was "If I Had A Million Dollars..." because they do, to renovate a gallery.

My judgement is that this was a worthwhile experiment, but the opportunity to use existing exhibits as a learning laboratory at a different host museum each year is not an opportunity to squander. I'm passionate about this opportunity for the profession to share a learning experience in the real world. To talk about the constraints of existing architecture, budget, etc. that shape our work. To share our hopes for exhibits, and what we discovered visitors ACTUALLY did with them once built. To share ideas of how to improve and stand upon each other's shoulders instead of staying siloed in our own museums. And I'm passionate about having these conversations in the exhibit galleries of museums, where our reality is all around us.

I've initiated the conversation with the planning committee for the 2020 ASTC conference, and we'll see where it leads us.

A-Z Museum Servicces is relocating to San Diego, California!

I am still available for projects anywhere I am needed. This just makes me “local” to a whole new area.

I am reaching out to area museums and looking forward to meeting my new professional neighbors.

This morning at The Tech Museum I will be leading the Annual Exhibits Walking Workshop. A great group of exhibit professionals will be critiquing Body Worlds and Tech Detectives with the goal of helping the museum's staff as they plan improvements to the shows. Audience participation is welcome, so please join us at 10:15 in the museum lobby. It's a fun brainstorming session that uses real world examples to inspire everyone in attendance to think about their own projects in a new light.

If you are here in San Jose, come to the Annual Exhibits Walking Workshop at 10am on Tuesday morning at the Tech Museum. We will be doing a constructive critique of two exhibits for the benefit of all attendees and the staff of the Tech.

As winter closes in, I have more availability in my schedule.
If your museum has a project that has been pushed down the priority list, maybe now is the time to bring in some expert help to get it done. I have helped museums in many ways, including:
Traveling exhibition installation and de-installation
Permanent exhibit design and fabrication
Research and writing
Policy and procedures
Collection storage planning, cleanup and inventory
Interactive exhibit repair and redesign for durability

With over 2 decades of museum experience, I probably have the skills to help you clear up some kind of backlog this winter.
