Next week, my assistant, Jaclyn, and I will release our top 5 wildlife moments from 2024.

There are so many amazing moments to reflect on- we witnessed a historic standoff between the Wapiti pack and a bison, experienced profound moments with a rhino family, spotted a maned wolf coming for a drink, watched an Indri lemur tend to her small baby from a few meters away, observed countless incredible big cat behaviors across Southern Africa, Chile, and India, and so much more!

Built for the cold climates of the Arctic, the musk ox is a sight to see.

They’ve inhabited what we now know as Alaska, Canada, and Greenland for an estimated 150,000+ years. They are the shaggy survivors of the Ice Age.

Did you know a jaguar can hold its breath for up to 20 minutes underwater?

These cats have adapted stunningly well to a life both on land and in water, so well that they’ve modified their hunting styles to include aquatic and semi aquatic prey like caiman, turtles, and fish.

They thrive in the tropical rainforests and wetlands in Brazil’s Pantanal, making them the formidable apex predator of the region.

Collard anteater in Costa Rica. Just incredible to see.

I had an awesome time with leading a wildlife workshop through this beautiful country last week.

I’m returning in a few days to lead one more wildlife workshop session Costa Rica, and my final trip of 2025!

Long gone are the days of tireless and painstaking efforts to modify blemishes in your image pixel by pixel. These new generative remove tools in Lightroom are elevating the photo editing experience to an incredible degree.

Take a look at the following example of an image I recently took on one of my Botswana workshops. I was easily able to remove a branch that partially obscured this leopard lounging in a tree using the recent Lightroom update. This edit is not perfect. If you look closely, there are indications that the image has been modified. Regardless, the quality and ease these results can be achieved are truly remarkable.

Now, this level of manipulation and the ease of which it can be performed raises some ethical questions in wildlife photography, and has sparked debates here in the wildlife community.

Can an edited image be a true representation of the scene? How much editing or cleaning up is acceptable in nature photography? These are questions that are only answerable at a personal level.

I hold steadfast that we as photographers must be honest and upfront with our modified images. I will never claim an image is not adulterated when it is. I am creating art and I feel I am portraying my very own interpretation of a scene before me. In general, my preference is to edit as little as possible, but on certain occasions, I may take advantage of what new technologies offer to elevate my work, such as I did with this leopard scene.

So, make your own decisions on how to use this new technology, but I urge you to be truthful when you have manipulated an image in order to elevate your work.

Let me know what you think about this new Lightroom feature and its implications on wildlife photography.

The new generative remove tools recently added to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom are truly revolutionary.

Long gone are the days of tireless and painstaking efforts to modify blemishes in your image pixel by pixel. These Lightroom updates are elevating the photo editing experience to an incredible degree.

Take a look at the following example of an image I recently took on one of my Botswana workshops. I was easily able to remove a pesky branch that partially obscured this leopard lounging in a tree using the most recent version of Lightroom. This edit is not perfect. If you look closely, there are indications that the image has been modified. Regardless, the quality and ease these results can be achieved are truly remarkable.

As of right now, the tool in Lightroom is limited to removing or cleaning up elements on the image, but I am sure it will not be long before we see some generative add features, much like in Photoshop.

Personally, I don't consider myself a photojournalist, so my tolerance for manipulating or cleaning up an image is most likely higher than someone who is documenting a scene for publication or advocacy.

Having said that, I hold steadfast that we as photographers must be honest and upfront with our modified images.

You can never tire of African sunsets like these.

This mother elephant and her feisty calf graced us with a gorgeous sight as they walked in front of the setting sun here in Botswana.

As the day came to a close, these elephants approached the river for one final drink before returning to the bush for warmth and safety.

Mother elephants are extremely protective of their babies, and females and their offspring stay together in close knit groups called breeding herds. It’s incredible to watch them all work together to ensure the success of their large families.

We wrapped up our Bengal tiger scouting trip in India with an absolutely incredible scene.

This tiger, a male cub of Riddhi (T134), gifted us the shot of a lifetime as he peered out from this archway in Ranthambore National Park.

Once a prominent hunting reserve for the Maharajah, this building served as a lodge for the Hindu monarchy. Now, many decades later, nature has begun reclaiming the space.

We’re looking forward to guiding our clients through this beautiful landscape in May 2025. Many, many more images to come from this stellar location.

Mother Bengal tigress (T84) and one of her well loved cubs. This older mother has been previously injured and is also battling cancer, which has limited her mobility.

Her cubs have adapted to helping their mother with hunting. It is an incredible sight to see.

Images by assistant, Jaclyn Merica, on our scouting trip for 2025 workshops!
