Hello everyone - we hope you're all doing well in this holiday season. Please read on for some important announcements concerning us and our social media...

First off, I want to announce the launch of our Consulting for Cruisers Service, available through our website. What is Cruising for Consultants? This is a consulting service geared toward cruisers or those dreaming of casting off the lines and sailing away. We'll put together my professional marine industry background and our combined cruising experience to aid in helping folks determine what boats are best suited to an individual's needs, the gear required, resource management, etc. You can find out much more on our website, link below, and once there, clicking on the 'Consulting for Cruisers' link.

I've been asked multiple times if prints of my photographs are available for purchase, and now they are. Selected photographs from our travels will soon be available for purchase through our website. there are plans to do an annual calendar and possibly, a coffee table type book. Individual images will be available as print-ready digital files, or as physical prints on paper, canvas, or metal. You can find more information on our website, link below, and following the 'Bill Ballard Photography' link.

Stay tuned!

We’re moored in tiny Oak Bluff Harbor on Martha’s Vineyard. Apparently, it’s a common practice to raft to a moored boat if no moorings are available. We’re watching the weather so we can start moving south again in a few days. The little town here is quaint, but overrun with partying folks and tourists.

An early morning and calm start today, bound for Martha’s Vineyard, in company with the J 44, FOILE ADIUEX.

We arrived in Salem Harbor, Salem, Massachusetts, a few hours ago after a sporty overnight sail across the Gulf of Maine from Boothbay Harbor, Maine. We’re here for several days visiting friends and getting some boat projects done before continuing south.

Lisa and I attempted to leave Belfast, ME today, bound for Tenants Harbor, ME. After nearly two hours battling against unexpected and stronger than forecast headwinds and an adverse tidal flow, we had barely made two miles or so towards our destination. Then came the fog. We turned back for Belfast Harbor. Here we wait for favorable winds to arrive, probably by mid-week. Patience pays, as does reading the tide charts…

We’re expecting somewhat nasty weather to come in tonight and last through Thursday, so we moved to another anchorage to get better shelter from the forecasted strong northeasterly winds. We’re anchored between McGathery and around Islands, and surprisingly, are the only boat here.

One comment we’ve heard many times on this trip is, “you’re a long way from home!” Well, not really. Jo Beth has been our home for seven years now. People are always surprised by that as well, which surprises us. But what we’ve found surprising is the vast majority of cruising boats we see here are from Maine. We’ve seen a few from New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island, and a few foreign boats - from Canada and New Zealand, and a few flying Caribbean flags. It’s a beautiful place to sail - and worth the trip. More southern sailors should do it.

We sailed today from Lovely Buck’s Harbor, Maine to the Wooden Boat School Harbor in Brooklin, Maine. And yes, Wooden Boat School is a place where traditional wooden boat construction is taught, among many other things related to boats and sailing. I was a student here way back in 1991. Here until Saturday or so. Typical Maine weather; overcast with fog overnight and a bit chilly. We’re here until Saturday.

Our arrival at port Jefferson was not as anticipated…lost the engine sea water pump, or so I think, just as we were entering the harbor channel. Winds were such that sailing in wasn’t a safe option, so SeaTow was called. Letting things cool to investigate. Ugh.

We anchored for the night in the small inner harbor at Oriental, NC. The weather is quite lovely now, but we were greeted by a nasty squall upon arrival. Tomorrow, we sail for Belhaven, NC and Dowry Creek Marina to wait out some seriously (forecasted) nasty weather!
