Floor Play is a new theatre company which recycles space and reimagines the purpose of theatre and performance. Initially, Floor Play reclaimed domestic spaces, turning them into ‘stripped-down theatres’ in which we installed simple lighting and put on short plays. Drinks were served in the intervals during which all of the creators were present, allowing the audience to talk freely to them or jus

t among other spectators. This atmosphere of creativity, diversity and friendliness (it was in a domestic space and so immediately broke down the more formal conventions of a theatre) made it not just a wonderful event but forged a community among those who performed and those who perceived. What we found was that the minimal distance between actor and audience created a real intimacy and powerfully blurred the boundaries between theatre and reality allowing the audience to connect on a deeply personal level.
