Ok we did a stretching session today for the parents at Sholing, so here are some of my thoughts - hope they are helpful!
First, frequency of stretching is the most important thing. If you can find 10 minutes to do some stretching every day you will improve much more than if you stretch a lot one or two days a week.
How long should you hold each stretch for? i would say at least 30 seconds for each stretch and do each stretch 3 times.
You should stretch your shoulders and do bridges (even if you are not good at it! -in fact especially if you are not good at it!)
Also left and right leg splits and box splits.
This effectively means you have 6 stretches to do 3 times each for 30 seconds each, which equals 9 minutes! Not too much out of a day, surely?
Do not forget that you only stretch until the muscle just starts to hurt, then you must hold completely still until the muscles relax - you can use pillows or cushions to help support you in position to manage this. As you become more flexible you can increase the time you hold the stretch for or push harder ( not both at the same time).
If you can stretch after a hot bath or shower this will help because the muscles will already be more relaxed.
What ever else you do make sure that you stretch after doing any workout, run, gymnastics session or what ever exercise you may do - if you don't then the muscles will tighten up and make you even more INflexible!
As I said I hope these suggestions help, and feel free to ask me if anything is not clear or if you want any other advice!
