there is surely a better way to do this. i will try to find out, in the meantime, some places I like to go to for breakfast, lunch, coffee, a swim or a nap!
Food Scene
Dionis
Nice place for a coffee or breakfast, in the shade of the pergola and the breeze from the sea. Next to the green market, the fish market and Lipanović's wineshop. Friendly service.
PERMO simply makes the best bread in town and probably in Croatia. Try the peka that can be bought whole, halved or by the quarter, white or brown. PERMO also makes the best croissants, krafne, and strudels. Open only in the morning. Recommended ritual: get up early, go for a swim and enjoy this pure moment of serenity, have a quick rinse, go to Permo get bread and a viennoiserie, find a seat in the shade on the Riva, order a coffee and wonder how beautiful life is. Then go to the green market and do the shopping for the day. Seek the shade of the back streets to walk back home to prepare breakfast and a picnic (and start thinking about never leaving Vis!).
KONOBA BAKO
1 Ulica Ivana Gundulića, Komiža
Konoba Bako, among the three of the better restaurants in Komiža located next door to each other, is situated on the northern side of bay and has a beautiful view over the water and the village. The restaurants are famous for their lobster and their excellent seafood. Pick from the lobster tank or the catch of the day. It may be a good idea to book in advance during high season months.
Roki's
Plisko Polje
Slow food served in the centre of the island, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Rookie’s specialties are their wines and their peka, a typical dish that is slowly cooked under the bell or peka over coals. The dish must be ordered the day prior or when you book. Choose from lamb, fish or octopus. Roki’s is not the only Konoba on Vis to offer this style of cooking but guests have always been happy with their experience and Roki’s will pick you up and drop you back to town, You can try all their wines as you won't have to drive back Vis narrow winding roads in the dark. Like other slow food places on Vis, it offers enjoyable experience to the ones ready for its unhurried pace.
Konoba Stoncica
Good seafood restaurant on the small beach of Stoncica bay. Another place for an unforgettable moment of you life ;-) They also organise wedding parties, those days are not quiet and dont feel like the entire bay is yours and only yours! Check it first.
Pizzeria Karijola
The Karijola (wheelbarrow) offers the most spectacular view on Vis bay and serves the best pizzas (thin crusty) including local specialties like "Slana pogača", rustic bread with tomato sauce, anchovies, onion and capers, nice music. The Karijola is on the way to K*t on a very quiet little square serving a few old families' houses. Service may get slow when the place is full, this is the opposite of a fast food joint, it serves simple food made of good ingredients in a fabulous setting.
Pojoda
8 Ulica don Cvjetka Marasovića, Vis
Good food, including local dishes specific to the island served in a walled garden or inside. Nice setting.
Konoba Lola
12 Ul. Matije Gupca, Vis
Nice fusion food served in a gorgeous setting, a walled garden among bronze sculptures. A must!
Villa Kaliopa
32 Ulica Vladimira Nazora, Vis
Beautiful seafood served in the park of the neighbouring ancient mansion, old statues, tall palm trees and see breeze for perfect dinner.
Titova špilja
Borovik village
TITO'S CAVES Titova spilja ('Tito's Cave') were used as a base by Tito in 1944 during the Second World War. They are located on the slopes of Hum, on the way to Hum's pick (where you need to go watch the sunset). Views are fantastic and the short hike is an opportunity to walk through different mediterranean bushes, colours ans smells.
Planinarski dom Hum
Podselje village
Hum, the highest point on the island at 587 metres above sea level offers glorious views of Komiza and Bisevo Island. The walk takes about two hours from Komiza, or you can drive. I'd drive. Plan at least one evening to be there for sunset, why not bring an icebox (ask us), glasses, and some nice wine or champagne? One shall not, never, under no circumstance, drive up the road through the military area, which is very clearly marked, it would rightfully trigger the anger of the guard and seriously ruin your romantic evening.
Where would you go to be around nature?
Blue Cave
Tours to the Blue Cave on Bisevo Island are best taken from Komiza but can be booked from Vis and then include transport to Komiza. There are a variety of excursions from only the visit to the Blue Cave to many stops along the beaches of Bisevo and Vis. Feel free to ask us to make arrangements.
Green Cave
Zaglav Beach
Zaglav is a lovely fine sand beach, a rarity in Croatia. Drive to Milna, and follow the trail indicated at the end of the beach. It is a pleasant 1/2 hour walk through the low bushes along the shoreline. There is a small konoba serving coffee and drinks, and providing a cool place to enjoy it. The beach is perfect for children as it is shallow and sandy, and the waters are so clear! But it has no shade, bring sun lotion (and a parasol...).
Srebrna
Located at Rukavac,
the "silver" beach has the warmest and some of the clearest waters on Vis. Bring a picnic, we provide containers and bags just for that, and hang your hammock under the shade of the filao trees.
Biševo Island
Served by a regular (small) ferry from Komiza
Where would you go to get a feel for the local history and culture?
Vis Archaeological Museum
Located at Vis
Housed in the Baterija, an Austrian fortress built in 1841, this small museum has the largest collection of Hellenistic artefacts in Croatia, including ancient Greek pottery, jewellery and sculpture. The highlight is an exquisite 4th-century BC bronze head of the goddess Artemis. A room on the other side of the courtyard displays relics retrieved from shipwrecks. The courtyard hosts Klapa (a capela traditional singing) concerts as part of the Vis summer festival.
Shopping
Konzum
Everything you need is here, if you can't find it ask. Staff is nice.
