Coral polyps up close ... Coral polyps produce calcium carbonate to create a hard and protective limestone exoskeleton known as calicles forming a supportive rocky structure to grow on. Corals also have growth rigs just like trees. They only grow 1-2 cm every year, so next time you step on coral and break off 10cm, just know you are throwing away about 10 years growth. These babies are well worth protecting! They are home to animals, a food source and protect our coastline from serious wave energy.
