Our course of the week is…

The George Golf Club, established nearly a century ago, is often referred to as “the Old Course” by visitors, especially those from Fancourt. Designed by Charles Murray in the 1930s, the course has retained much of its original layout, with only minor modifications, including a dam between the 1st and 18th holes and the addition of bunkers during a 1990s upgrade. Known for its affordability, George is a favorite among golfers, with tens of thousands of visitors playing almost half the available rounds each year. Despite heavy traffic, the course is consistently in excellent condition, and its greens are considered among the best in South Africa. The layout features a unique distribution of holes, with a lopsided arrangement of par threes and fives, and the signature 17th hole stands out for its challenging tee shot across a valley to a raised green. Over the years, the course has transformed into a stunning parkland, with a variety of trees and the famous George heather, making it feel like a private garden estate. As Stuart McLean notes in South African Golf Courses: A Portrait of the Best, the course has evolved into an enchanting paradise, with undulating fairways through rolling valleys that test a golfer’s skills and offer a serene, countryside atmosphere.
