You’ve heard of Africa's ‘Big-5’ but have you heard of the ‘ugly five’? Over the years, people have come up with alternative lists for interesting animals to look out for on Safari. Even though they’re loved less for their looks, each of these magnificent creatures have their own set of unique & fascinating skills & traits.

Since Lion King, these highly social Warthog is known as Pumba. They spend their day savaging for food, wallowing in mud and run around with their antenna-like tails straight up.

Marabou Stork (or the ‘undertaker’) often hangs around big herds so they can catch fleeing insects disturbed by their movement.

Hyena are successful hunters of the ‘bush’, exhausting their pray for kilometers. Hyena mothers are highly attentive to their young who suckle for as long as 6 months! Babies are born with a full set of teeth and open eyes

Vultures are often found near a ‘kill’ waiting to finish off a carcass once deserted by its predator. There are 11 species in Africa recognized as endangered or critically endangered

There’s an African legend that says a Wildebeest is made up of 5 animals: a buffalo’s horns, a locust’s head, a cow’s body, lion’s tail and goats legs. Maybe not the fairest of the all but certainly a spectacle to behold during their ‘Great Migration’ in Tanzania & Kenya

Today celebrates International World Leopard Day!

These nocturnal beauties are one of the strongest predators who can climb a tree whilst carrying their prey as heavy as 40kg!
You'll notice the tail is almost as long as its body. This is used to balance whilst climbing trees. A group of leopards is known as a Leap. They can leap 20 feet forward in a single bound and jump ten feet straight up to capture prey.

Happy World Hippo Day!

Did you know that these mud-loving mammals have 4 hearts and are Africa's third largest mammal after elephants & rhino? Hippopotamus derives from the Greek term 'river horse' even though they can't swim underwater nor float.

Blissful Mekoro (dugout canoe) safaris are unique to quintessential Botswana

These activities afford guests the opportunity to glide through the Okavango Delta’s beautiful labyrinth of waterways, lagoons and islands created by Floodplains which make its way from North to South between May-Sep.

The silence of the wilderness comes alive with a chorus of insects, frogs, birds and rustling reeds as you immerse & tune in to nature’s calls whilst spotting an exotic frog clinging to reeds, elephant drinking at water's edge or lions meandering on the savannah. Stunning!

Guests are poled by an expert guide and his pole (‘nkashi’) that propel you along the waterways with incredible balance! Guides are locals who’ve been poling mekoro since childhood and take great pride in sharing insight on the waterways, heritage & wildlife you possibly won’t find on google.

How incredible is Chobe!

It supports the largest surviving elephant population in the world and dubbed the ‘land of giants’. These migratory ele's make seasonal movements for up to 200km from Chobe to Linyanti river where they eventually settle in dry season.
