Have you heard about Camissa? What about Hoerikwaggo?
Indigenous people who lived on the tip of Africa referred to Cape Town as 'the place of sweet water'. It was a good place to hunt and gather and to herd cattle.
Our excellent guide and storyteller from gave us a vivid historical synopsis of of the first people; the hunters & gatherers, the pastoralists, the arrival of European settlers and the shifting attitude towards natural resources.
Robben Island cancelled our tour this morning due to huge swells 🌊 caused by the supermoon 🌕
But it's a wind free and sunny day 🌞 so the group from the US 🇺🇸 is spending a few hours exploring some of the other attractions at the V&A Waterfront:
Cape Town often experiences serious winter storms. After a particularly bad storm in June 1858 wrecked over 30 vessels, Lloyds of London refused to cover ships spending the winter in Table Bay.
In September 1860 Midshipman HRH Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria’s second son, tipped the first load of stone to start construction of the breakwater for Cape Town’s first harbour to make it a safe haven all year round for passing ships. The has since turned into one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions.
The evenings are getting lighter in the southern hemisphere. In mid August, the sun sets at about 18h30.
One of the most beautiful places in Cape Town to watch the sunset is Noordhoek Beach on the Cape Peninsula.
The Yoga & Pilates group from Berlin will be visiting this serene beach in April 2025.

Hermanus has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. When planning a stay in South Africa, make sure to include this charming seaside town about 125km southeast of Cape Town. It's known as a whale-watching destination during the months of July – late October but many people visit from December to April, being drawn to the beautiful Blue Flag beaches, which include Voëlklip Beach and the 18-km long Grotto Beach. is also bang in the middle of the Cape Floristic Region, with hiking trails leading you through one of the highest plant diversity regions in the world 🌸🌿🌺
Spring is in the air ☀️
The lovely Natsikai, Assistant Manager is preparing for a busy season ahead in Cape Town😊 🇿🇦
On this day, 18 July, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in 1918, at Mvezo, a tiny village in the Eastern Cape.
Nelson Mandela gave 67 of his years to public service and the fight for freedom. As a tribute to his memory and in celebration of his contribution to justice, many people spend 67 minutes to serve others today.
There is a statue of Nelson Mandela outside Drakenstein Correctional Centre, formerly Victor Verster Prison. This was Mandela’s last place of incarceration. The place from where he walked to freedom on 11 February 1990, after 27 years of imprisonment.
These words are engraved on the plinth below his statue :
For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s
chains, but to live in a way that respects
and enhances the freedom of others.
The true test of our devotion to freedom
is just beginning.
I have walked that long road to freedom.
I have tried not to falter. I have made
missteps along the way.
But I have discovered the secret that
after climbing a great hill, one only finds
that there are many more hills to climb.
I have taken a moment here to rest, to
steal a view of the glorious vista that
surrounds me, to look back on the
distance I have come.
But I can rest only for a moment, for
with freedom comes responsibilities,
and I dare not linger, for my long walk
is not yet ended.

A land of vast horizons, Namibia is one of the most scenically striking countries on the African continent. It is a huge, arid and mostly desolate territory of haunting beauty.
Extending almost 2000 kilometres along the cold Atlantic Ocean is the Namib - the oldest desert on the planet. The shifting sand dunes in Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei will leave a lifelong impression.
Ladeisha, Benn, Jan & Ona visited Namibia in June. Winter is the best time to explore this remarkable country.

Several cold fronts have hit the Western Cape since the start of July and the whole province has been declared a disaster area. Heavy rains, gale-force winds and flooding have ravaged many parts of the province. At least 100 000 people have been significantly impacted by severe weather in Cape Town. Thousands of displaced people are being accommodated at community halls and other temporary places of shelter.
There are pockets of calm and glimpses of sun in between the fronts. But as much as the mountains can be dramatically beautiful in this type of weather, it is always paramount to study the weather forecast before heading out. Rather turn around than put yourself and others at risk.
In the heat of the day, we suddenly noticed zebras moving at full speed towards the floodplains. -They're chased by a lion! Our guide spotted the young, ambitious male trying to take on a herd by himself. We watched the lion give up the chase and instead heading for a drink of water.
A few hundred metres away, a pride slumbered under a tree. We noticed that one lioness had injuries on her belly and her back.
Another one got up and stroked her head against her cheek.. it looked like a hug of compassion. She started walking towards the water's edge and a little cub watched her walk away... then hurried after! The rest of the pride followed suit and we realised that they had a kill; a Sable antelope, lying belly up by the water's edge.
The young male strolled past the safari vehicles and decided to rest a few hundred metres away from the pride.
Our guide was confident that the injured lioness would have a full recovery.
Winter comes with golden grass in 🌾🐘🦁🦒
Even though the evenings get chilly with temperatures down to 8 degrees Celsius, many people find this to be the best time of year for 🦓🐆
It is the dry season. The grass is short, many trees have lost their leaves and the animals are easier to spot.
When in Joburg make sure to visit funky in Lorentzville ~ an inspiring hub of creativity ❣💯

The trail takes you past De Villiers Dam, one of the five reservoirs that were built on the top of Table Mountain about 150 years ago. Although not the main water source for Cape Town anymore, the reservoirs are still in use and supply the suburb of Camps Bay.

Tropical colours on the famous Blue Flag Beach in Hermanus ⛱
The remains of a 🐋 whale skeleton along the Shipwreck Trail.. an interesting discussion ensued: was that the whale's blowhole? Or was it was the pelvis bone? Do whales have pelvis bones?
The Shipwreck Trail starts inside the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. If you hike up the ridge and down to the coast, the first wreck you'll see is The Nolloth, which sank in 1965 with a full load of liquor.
The most prominent and famous wreck is the SS Thomas T. Tucker. It sailed too close to the shoreline to avoid detection by German submarines (1942).
Perhaps the most delightful of all were all the bonteboks 🦌🦌🦌 a species that almost went distinct and was brought to the Cape of Good Hope to be saved from extinction. They are thriving there and have become used to seeing humans around.
There are not many places where you can go for a swim 🌊🏊🏼♀️ and have a bontebok audience🦌🦌🦌😀

Happy penguin news! 🐧❤🐧❤🐧 The South African Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment has announced that he will use his Ministerial powers to end a legal challenge and settle the dispute around fishing rights versus penguin protection. The Minister has instructed department lawyers to settle the matter and secure the penguins’ fish diet for years to come. This refers to the widely supported litigation launched in March 2024 by @birdlife_sa and @sanccob 🐧❤🐧❤🐧❤
Chobe National Park is known for its large herds of elephants. An estimated 70 000 individuals live in this park. On a recent visit with @svenskastilresorab we were treated to magnificent sightings of elephants of all sizes 🐘 🐘🐘

The magnificent Walker Bay has been home to our human ancestors for at least 60 000 years. We walked through the white sanddunes and spotted Southern right whales 🐋 breaching! These whales migrate between the Antarctic and the southern coastlines of South Africa, South America and Australia. Picnic lunch on the beach was a lovely surprise 🤩☕🍪 before we entered the Klipgat Caves, where our ancestors lived in Middle and Late Stone Age. This was the second part of Day 3 on the stunning @diversitytrail in the Southern Overberg 🌸🐛🌾🐋🐾🍷
The first part of Day 3 on the @diversitytrail was GREEN 🌿🌱💚 We walked through the beautiful old Milkwood forest, a large area between Stanford and Gansbaai, from where @grootbos got its name. Our knowledgeable guide Christoff explained that scientist have identified over 150 species of moss in this forest! @grootbos grows a lot of its own vegetables, microgreens and fruit, which you'll get to taste every evening on the @diversitytrail
Up close with a Cape Lappet Moth Caterpillar, the medicinal Cancer Bush, pretty Pincushions, the always-amazing King Proteas in bud and other fabulous fynbos on @grootbos which covers 4000 hectars in the southern Overberg. It must have been close to 30 degrees today... we cooled off in the the dam 🏊🏼♂️ and recharged before walking into the old, mystical Afromontane forest. Smiles all around 😁😁😁 when we were picked up and driven back to our tranquil accommodation oasis. This was the 2nd day of slackpacking on the magnificent @diversitytrail 🌸💚
First day on the @diversitytrail in Walker Bay. Lunch at @stanford_kitchen1 🍷🍕 followed by a boat cruise on @theladystanford on the Klein River, spotting African Fish Eagle 🦅 Yellow-billed ducks 🦆 Blue Cranes and many other birds. Our guide demonstrated how buchu, pelargonium and wild Sage add flavour to gin 🍸 The frogs 🐸 serenaded us with an evening concert as we walked back from dinner. This was the perfect start of a slackpacking trail in the most beautiful surroundings 🌸💚
Fernklood Nature Reserve covers 18 square kilometers above the northern side of #Hermanus. Many trails were still closed because of rock slides caused by the storm that hit the Cape coast at the end of September. We hiked to Lemoenkop and enjoyed spectacular views over Walker Bay 🤩 We also got up close with the area's magnificent #fynbos vegetation 🌸🌾 More than 1250 plant species have been identified in this reserve.
We had a taste of super lekker local at @diestrandloper in #Langebaan 🐟 Local food, local staff & local charm ~ and a refreshing dip in the turquoise lagoon ☀️🏊♀️
Exhilarating ebike tour from Stellenbosch to @boschendal 🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️ The route takes you past historic wine farms in the picturesque Banhoek Valley. We were happy to have Sev from @adventureshop expertly guiding us through the steep, rocky and sandy parts 🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️🚴🏾♂️
