After finishing their kill the pack decided our vehicle was as good of a place as any to have some fun around! Okavango Delta a, Botswana.
After a stormy and wet night with some very welcome rain we awoke to this beautiful scene from camp,Xaranna Lodge,Okavango Delta,Botswana.
What a beautiful morning we had this morning up here in the Selinda Private Reserve in Botswana. The welcome appearance of clouds meant a cool morning was had by all. Towards the end of the morning the herds of elephants started appearing from out of the woodlands on their way out to the marsh. We sat quietly as several herds such as this one past by in quick succession giving us a front row seat to a memorable scene and experience.
One of our other goals of visiting this particular area in northern Kenya was to spend time on foot with wild dogs if at all possible. This pack had been studied by researchers so is accustomed to people on foot, we spent about half an hour or so with them as they trotted around and even killed a dikdik antelope nearby before crossing a riverbed and heading up a small hill. Safaris are not only about what you see, but how you see them. We are currently in the Mababe Depression in Botswana and the action continues!
Our final approach into the Lower Zambezi Valley this afternoon. It’s been a dry season this year so tough on the wildlife but it makes for high quality game viewing and photographic opportunities.Im looking forward to the next few days here in one of my favourite parts of Africa.
Our final approach into the Lower Zambezi Valley this afternoon ….its been a very dry season up here which makes for tough times for the wildlife but high quality game viewing. I’m looking forward to the next few days with our group in one of my favourite areas and camps.
What a beautiful few days we are having here in the Cape, the weather has been spectacular and we’ve spent the last few days enjoying properties we use for our safaris as either a starting or ending point. Pictured here is the view from Grootbos Lodge this morning, pods of dolphins in the bay and any day now the whales will arrive.
We decided that this morning we would send the younger members of the group off on their own adventures and the adults in the group would spend some time on foot tracking and approaching rhino. After finding some fresh tracks we followed up and shortly afterwards caught up to a group of 5. With the wind in our favor we were able to approach and view them from behind the termite mound, although suspicious of our presence they never really locked onto where we were and we were able to move out and leave them as we found them. A nice way to spend a morning!
Part of our groups arrival yesterday at our second camp in the slightly wetter, northern reaches of the Okavango Delta...
Yesterday morning we spent the last portion of the morning drive with some large herds of elephant as they arrived at a waterhole to slake their thirst....From there we boarded our flight into the wetter and more northern reaches of Botswana's Okavango Delta. A short chopper ride into camp across the floodplains was a great way to arrive and see the area from above.
We were very grateful that this young female leopard chose such a picturesque setting to spend her afternoon at. We sat for about an hour and a half with her as she prepared for her evening hunt in the fork of this impressive acacia tree. As it got dark, she dropped down into the lush grass and we left her to go about her evening hunt, alone and in peace, as it should be. Maswa Private Game Reserve,Tanzania.
