Also known as Kaapse Klopse, this annual New Year’s festival fills the city with colourful costumes, face paints, flamboyant hats, and lively music as troupes parade and dance through the streets.

As we approach the dawn of a new year, African Wildlife Plains looks forward to welcoming both new visitors to our enchanting continent and hopefully the return of familiar faces too. For many, this may be their first venture into the wonders of an African safari. While the excitement is palpable, we understand that the unknown can also feel a bit daunting. Each lodge offers its own unique daily experiences, so we've put together a glimpse of what a typical day in the stunning African bushveld might look like…

🌄 ☕️Early Morning - 5:30 - 6.30AM
The day begins early with a friendly wake up call from staff, accompanied by the morning sounds of nature... be sure to enjoy a cup of fresh coffee and a light snack all prepared for you.

🦁☕️Morning Game Drive - 6.30- 9.00am
After a briefing, guests set off on a sunrise morning game drive to spot active wildlife, guided by experienced staff. Usually there will be a coffee stop around the half-way point ...and may even include an energizing shot of local liqueur Amarula!

🍛☕️Breakfast 9.30 - 11.00am
Return to the lodge in time for a hearty breakfast, featuring cereals, eggs, and local dishes ...an opportunity to discuss the morning's sightings with your fellow travellers.

🏖Leisure Time - 11.00 - 13.00pm
A chance for guests to freshen up, relax by the pool perhaps or simply enjoy the tranquility of one's luxurious accommodation.

🌮Lunch 13.00- 14.30pm
Lunch is usually quite light and served either buffet-style or à la carte, featuring local ingredients as always!

🌿Afternoon Activity 14.30- 16.00pm
This is the ideal time for optional activities like guided nature walks or spa treatments.

🐘🍸Evening Game drive 16.00- 19.30pm
Guests embark on an evening game drive, for more wildlife sightings and usually stopping for drinks while watching the sun go down ...nothing beats a sundowner in the African bushveld!

🍝🍷Dinner 19.30- 21.00pm
After dark, guests return for a multi-course dinner highlighting local cuisine, sometimes outdoors under the stars.

🔥 Evening Relaxation 21.00 - 22.00pm
Post-dinner, guests gather around a fire for storytelling or stargazing, sometimes with options for night drives or walks.

😴Retire for the Night
Guests settle into luxurious accommodations, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wilderness and all ready to do it all again the next day!

🐆International Cheetah Day is observed annually on December 4th to raise awareness about the plight of cheetahs, the fastest land animals on Earth. The day aims to highlight conservation efforts and educate people about the challenges faced by this iconic species.

🐆Here at African Wildlife Plains this conservation issue is one very close to our hearts and want to once again throw a spotlight on one of our most favourite places in the world... Samara Karoo Reserve and their Cheetah conservation project, where we had the pleasure to stay earlier this year and saw firsthand the truly amazing work they do.

🐆The last wild cheetah in the Karoo was seen in the 1870s. Accused of being a threat to livestock, they were hunted and persecuted across the Eastern Cape to such an extent that they became locally extinct. This lasted until 2004, when Samara made history by reintroducing cheetah as apex predator in the Karoo landscape.

🐆Starting with just three individuals, including the iconic Sibella, Samara’s cheetah conservation programme has been a huge success. The Samara cheetah population has flourished to such an extent that offspring born on the property have been made available to other conservation areas, from national parks to private reserves.

🐆Huge thanks to Samara for your incredible dedication to Cheetah conservation, we feel honoured to play just a tiny part in your journey as with all our guests who stay at this incredible property...a part of their payment will be donated to this worthy project. 🤎

A mother's love, much like the fierce and nurturing bond seen in leopards, is both protective and instinctual. In the wild, a leopard mother fiercely guards her cubs, teaching them the essential skills needed for survival.

She leads them through the dense underbrush, demonstrating how to hunt and hide, instilling confidence in her offspring.

Her watchful eyes remain ever vigilant, scanning for threats while providing warmth and comfort in the safety of their tree-dwelling lair.

To experience such a sight of these incredible cats in their natural habitat is indescribable....
