Summer is orchid season, especially for the Red Disa. And Orange Kloof is one of the best places to find them. All hikes are about 6 hours long and require a permit and guide to be in this area of Table Mountain.
Disa Gorge is a great introduction to Orange Kloof, with no exposure or scrambling.
Hell's Gates is a great intermediate hike. Not much elevation gain, but there is some scrambling, mild exposure, boulder hopping and loose ground underfoot in places.
Frustration Gorge is for experienced and fit hikers, with a steep climb up the Gorge with rocky terrain, scrambling and exposure.
All hikes are R500 per person. Places limited to 10 per hike. Please WhatsApp to book your spot!

One of my favourite things about hiking on Table Mountain is that it doesn't matter the time of year - there is always something in bloom! As we head into high summer here in the Cape, we also head into the height of orchid season. But already there are some out, including the very rare Drip disa, Disa longicornu, and the lilac disa, D. harveiana (3, 4).
The irises come out in full force from spring through summer, with a Table Mountain endemic, Watsonia tabularis (1, 2).
There's delicate, pretty flowers such as pelargoniums and "lady's hands" (5, 6). And for the darker side, look out for the parasitic inkflowers and carnivorous sundews (7, 8, 9).

Summer in the Western Cape is synonymous with fire season. Our fynbos is not only adapted to survive fire; fire is essential to its survival. Some species of plant, like the fire lily (pic 1), will not germinate until smoke seeps through the soil to the bulbs. Many bulb and corm species, like orchids, tulips, and iris species, grow prolifically after a fire.
Other plants are re-seeders or re-sprouters,growing from stores in the soil.
Table Mountain has had a lot of fires on it in the last 2 years, tearing through indigenous afromontane forest, fynbos, and alien vegetation. Fire is not inherently bad, but due to the alien vegetation, strong winds and cities built around the fynbos, they can be dangerous. To read more about the effects and consequences of fire in our unique Cape Floristic Region, tap the link in my bio.

My favourite hike on Table Mountain - Hell's Gates in Orange Kloof. A magical, wild part of the mountain, and after record winter rains, part of it is even wilder thanks to fallen trees. What a pleasure taking a group of friends, with some from drought stricken Namibia, into this lush, green, idyllic area.
Please note that Orange Kloof is a restricted area, and a permit and qualified mountain guide are required to hike in this area. It is also a dog free zone! If you are caught without a permit or with a dog, you are subject to on the spot fines.

Not quite the night, but the 21st day of September was spent raising money for the Wildlife Unit. Two hiking groups did different trails depending on ability. A group of us did the more adventurous West Peak in the Helderberg Reserve.
Thanks to Binny Ridgway for organising and to for providing snacks and for providing us with the gear. At last count, we'd raised over R36 000!

Last week, before all the crazy storms, there was a smaller cold front that brought good rain. So I went exploring on Table Mountain, found a cave, and played around with this timer selfie thingy... dogs got bored pretty quickly with that!puppy
