Great news!!!!

United Airlines has today started selling tickets for new direct flights between Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) and Cape Town, becoming the first airline to provide nonstop roundtrip service from the US capital to South Africa. The US Department of Transportation granted the airline three weekly direct flights, which will commence on November 17, 2022. The flights will depart from IAD on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and from Cape Town on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

Qantas has good news for South Africans travelling to Perth!

The Australian airline will start flights between Perth and Johannesburg on November 1, operating three flights a week.

This will be the only direct service from South Africa to Western Australia, complementing Qantas’s existing four-times-weekly Johannesburg-Sydney service, which re-started post-pandemic on January 6 this year.

Flights depart Perth at 15h00 and arrive in Johannesburg at 20h15, with a flight duration of 11 hours. Outbound, the Johannesburg flight departs at 22h00 and arrives in Perth at 13h55 the following day, with a duration of 9 hours 55 minutes. The flights will cut more than six hours from the fastest current travel time.

A hidden gem in the UAE

Ras Al Khaimah, is a region that prides itself on its adventure tourism and an 80-minute drive south of Dubai.

Adventure tourists can take part in a variety of outdoor activities, from kayaking through the mangroves and exploring canyons to mountain biking and visiting the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp.

Ras Al Khaimah is also home to the highest mountain in the UAE, Jebel Jais, in the northwestern Hajar range at a height of 1 934m.

Adventure-seekers may like a ride on the world’s longest zipline from the peak, reaching up to 160km/h on a 2.83km line; or go on the Jais Sledder, which reaches up to 40km/h. The total ride takes about eight minutes to cover 1 840m of curves and waves, not unlike a rollercoaster.

Jebel Jais also houses the highest restaurant in the UAE, the 1484 By Puro, 1 484m above sea level.

Proud moment for South Africa

In third place, and highest-ranking city in Africa, is Cape Town. The newspaper says its “topography and geography alone make [it] stand out above the others” and that its beaches, copious sunshine hours and towering Table Mountain, the latter providing the highest view and the biggest green space out of any city in the list, bumped it into a podium position.

Zanzibar scraps PCRs for vaccinated guests

Fully vaccinated visitors to Zanzibar will no longer be subject to PCR testing on arrival from Friday (April 1).

Proof of a valid vaccination certificate with a QR code is essential. All travellers must also now complete the Travellers Health Surveillance Form within 24 hours of arrival.

Unvaccinated visitors must still present a negative PCR test result, from a test taken within the 72 hours prior to departure.

Unvaccinated children aged five years and younger, as well as transiting passengers, are exempt from the PCR requirement.

Air Belgium is to begin flights to South Africa in September.

The airline will operate two scheduled flights a week from Brussels to Johannesburg and two to Cape Town. One Cape Town flight is direct, the other is linked to the Johannesburg flight.

At this stage, the service is a seasonal one, from September 14, 2022, to March 25, 2023

Mauritius has dropped the requirement for visitors to take a pre-travel PCR test with a negative result, as a condition of entry to the country.

The move will undoubtedly drive more leisure and business tourism to the island state.

Turkish Airlines in South Africa has issued a statement with news of the relaxation of entry requirements to Turkey for travellers from South Africa.

To be exempt from quarantine, vaccinated passengers must carry proof of vaccination.

Unvaccinated passengers must provide either a negative result from a PCR test taken within the 72 hours before arrival in Turkey, or a negative result from an antigen test taken in the 48 hours before arrival in Turkey.

Passengers under 12 years are exempt from having to present PCR or antigen tests and vaccine certificates on entry.

United Airlines will offer three non-stop flights a week, year-round, between Cape Town International Airport and its New York/Newark hub. Start date is June 5, 2022.

United is the only airline to offer non-stop flights between Cape Town and the US. The Cape Town service opens up the possibilities for Capetonians to tap into its vast network of US cities including Chicago, Houston, Washington DC and Los Angeles.

National carrier of the UAE, Etihad, intends to resume flights between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg from March 3.

Passengers entering the UAE must have a certificate of proof of a negative PCR test taken within the 48 hours before departure. They will also require a negative rapid PCR test taken within the six hours before departure. They then must take a further PCR test upon arrival in Abu Dhabi.

EMIRATES resumes flights from South Africa

A daily Johannesburg flight begins on January 29 and double-daily services on the route commence from February 1.

Daily flights to and from Cape Town and Durban will operate from February 1.

Passengers travelling from Emirates’ African network with Dubai as their final destination require a 48-hour PCR test.

They must present a valid negative COVID‑19 PCR test certificate with a QR code for a test conducted at an approved facility, and the validity must be calculated from the time the sample was collected. Upon arrival in Dubai, passengers will undergo an additional COVID‑19 PCR test and remain in self‑quarantine until the test results are received.

NEWS: Fully vaccinated international travellers arriving in England or Scotland will no longer need to take any COVID test on day 2. The changes come into effect from 04h00 on February 11.

Also from this date, unvaccinated travellers no longer have to test on day eight of their stay or self-isolate for 10 days. However, they must still take a COVID test pre-departure and again on day two of their stay. The day of arrival is treated as day zero.

South Africans are once again welcome to enter Turkey!

Turkish Airlines resumed its South Africa services on December 18, however, until recently, South Africans were only permitted to transit in Istanbul and not enter Turkey. This has now changed and South Africans are allowed to enter the country again.

Those wishing to enter Turkey, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, will require a certificate of a negative result from a PCR test taken in the 72 hours prior to arrival.

Passengers who are unvaccinated must also quarantine for seven days at a declared address. The quarantine can be terminated early by a negative result from a PCR test taken on the fifth day of quarantine.

Cape Town - The Ceres Rail Company's iconic steam train experience...

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of doing something quite unique to Cape Town - the steam train trip to the Elgin Valley.

The Ceres Railway track, which carried its first steam locomotive through the Elgin Valley in 1912, departs every Saturday and Sunday from Cape Town and makes it way to the Elgin Railway Market and then returns to Cape Town at the end of the day. The trip takes around 3 hours each way and you get to spend 3 hours at the Elgin Railway market.

The steam train winds its way up Sir Lowry's Pass giving you the opportunity to not only see beautiful landscapes but also see the steam train on the curves of the tracks. You then descend into Grabouw and the valley known as apple country.

Here the train stops at the Elgin Railway market. The market was originally an old apple warehouse built along the tracks in the 1940s. The market today has a steampunk aesthetic, with copper fixtures, and old brick walls.The market has a variety of food stalls and retail stands selling quirky items to take home or give as gifts.

There are five different types of tickets to choose from:

1) Day Seating in a restaurant-type booth 2) Bar Lounge Seating for over 18's
3) Family Coupe for a max of three adults, or two adults with two children
4) Family Compartment for a max of six adults, or four adults with two children
5) The Observation Car which is ideal for private groups, described as "best seat in the house", is suitable for large groups of between 15 and 28 people, with air-conditioning, optional private bar, optional exclusive catering, and all-round views.

The steam train also has a fully licensed bar on board and serves a variety of snacks and refreshments.

This is definitely something I would advise one to do when looking for something different to do for the day. suitable and fun for all ages.

Mauritius has suddenly lifted the Covid-related travel ban on travellers from South Africa with effect from Friday January 7th.

Vaccinated guests require no quarantine, but must have a certificate of a negative PCR test taken 72 hours before departure - they will be tested again on arrival and once more on day 5.

It is mandatory for these vaxxed visitors to have proof of Covid-19-specific travel insurance.
