Sometimes the highlight of your safari … can be a cow.

Cows are a way of life for the pastoralists in the Mara, and at Enonkishu Conservancy we celebrate them.

The Enonkishu team works hard on a regenerative grazing plan where wildlife and livestock live in harmony. Their Sustainable Rangeland Management Program involves regular bio monitoring, planning, moving of predator-proof mobile bomas and livestock husbandry.

This is overseen by Leshan Nampasso, an accredited professional (holistic management) with the , an accountant and a landowner in Enonkishu.

Leshan also inspires the children in our conservation libraries at the Emarti schools. Leshan’s mum, Everlyn, manages the beading station at the Mara Training Centre.

Leshan is off to visit West Bijou ranch in Colorado for 2 months to continue his learning. Over there he will focus on bison.

Have you ever seen a flying banana?

Our team was thrilled to spot this Southern yellow-billed hornbill catching a lizard during a recent GVI Expedition in South Africa. The bird’s characteristic yellow bill has garnered it the nickname, “flying banana”.

Yellow-billed hornbills will eat insects, chicks, frogs, chameleons, ants, termites and, in the case of the one pictured, a rock monitor that it snagged off the ground.

This omnivorous bird was also made famous by the Disney classic, The Lion King, where it is used as the inspiration for the popular character, Zazu.

There's an art to tracking big game – especially the iconic big cats of the Maasai Mara. 🐾

Nothing beats watching the sunset over the South African savannah.

Here’s what a day on our GVI Expedition in South Africa could look like for you:

🐾 Rise and shine! Start your day off with an early morning game drive where you will learn the basics of animal tracking, identification and signs.

🐆Now it’s your turn! Get the chance to use telemetry or GPS equipment to locate trackable animals on the afternoon drive.

🥂After a thrilling afternoon in the wild, it’s time to wind down. Enjoy drinks at a bird hide before heading back to the lodge for a boma barbeque (locally known as a “braai”).

🐦It’s time for the battle of the bird sounds! Join your guide for a fun bird identification competition to see who knows their “whoooops” from their “ti-woo, ti-woos”.
