Brilliant day at sea today!!
Don't get between a White Shark and its food!
This Shorttail Stingray learned a hard lesson when it went for the bait at the same time as the White Shark.
As an environmentally responsible operator we don't feed any of the sharks we encounter. The bait is only a visual object to bring them up towards the surface. We always do our best to keep the bait away from any of the sharks. In this case the White Shark and Stingray came for the bait from different sides. Our bait handler removed the bait from the water and the White Shark took a bite of the closest object to it. Unfortunately the poor Stingray. White Sharks will generally not attack Stingrays of this size.
The thick skin of the Stingray limited the amount of damage the White Shark could have done, but it still lost a small piece of its fin. The Stingray swam away hastily and not too badly injured.
In 27 years of operation this is the first time we witnessed something like this from our boat.
