Set in an area of pristine wilderness, Kaingu Safari Lodge uses natural materials to blend in as unobtrusively as possible with the surroundings. Built on raised private wooden decks overlooking the Kafue River, each of the thatched, tented chalets has its own private balcony, and features polished wooden flooring and an additional open air shower or stone-laid bath. The Finfoot family house has two en-suite bedrooms and an outside shower, with a central living area opening onto a private deck overlooking the river. Kaingu Bush Camp is more rustic and has three spacious Bedouin style tents, each with an attached roofed sitting area and an adjoining open-air bathroom. Finally, for the more adventurous, a night out under the stars can be arranged. Escorts on night watch and a safety fire are provided! Children are particularly welcome at Kaingu Safari Lodge. Situated in Zambia's Namwala Game Management Area, Kaingu is located just opposite the Kafue National Park on a spectacular and remote stretch of the Kafue River, with its myriad of channels, rocky rapids, small islands, sandbanks and large granite boulders. The Kafue is one of Africa's true wilderness areas. Covering 22 440 square kilometres, the Park's unmatched variety of species and the fact that that you can enjoy the wildlife almost on your own, makes this a special experience. Dunia Camp is located in the south west corner of the Central Seronera Valley, deep in the fabled Serengeti in Northern Tanzania. The intimate mobile camp is perfectly situated to experience the beauty of this remote wilderness, and the splendour of the wildebeest migration. The area is renowned for its abundance of wildlife, and in particular for its big cats and the extraordinary annual Great Migration when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra pass through the area. The lodge offers 8 luxurious tents, elegantly furnished and with bathrooms en-suite. Their private verandas allow guests to indulge in the serenity of the vast plains of the Serengeti and the picturesque Moru Kopjes that rise from the plains. The atmosphere is that of a classic colonial-style safari, with great attention to detail. Big Cave Camp is positioned on top of a massive granite ridge, commanding inspirational views across the Matobo National Park. The eight thatched suites are built right into the granite boulders, which ensures they are cool in summer and warm in winter. Resonating African creative flair, each has a private balcony with magnificent views into the National Park. There is also a honeymoon suite, and family rooms for those with small children. Established in 1926 as Rhodes Matopos National Park, a bequest from Cecil John Rhodes who was buried here, the renamed Matobo National Park is a World Heritage Site. Its rocky outcrops or dwalas are composed entirely of granite that has weathered into fantastic shapes of balancing boulders over the centuries. This rocky landscap has a tremendously rich heritage of San rock art, with over 2000 sites on record. The Matobo Hills is high in botanic diversity, with over 200 species of tree, including the mountain acacia, wild pear and the paperbark tree. There are also many aloes, wild herbs and over 100 grass species. The wide diversity of fauna includes 175 birds, 88 mammals, 39 snakes and 16 fish species. You are likely to come across game such as leopard, rhino, sable antelope, impala, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and ostrich at Big Cave Camp, and a visit to the adjacent small Whovi Game Park is highly recommended.

Narina Lodge is set unobtrusively beneath centuries' old trees on the banks of the Sabie River in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve one of the best game viewing locations in South Africa. Occupying one of the most stunning settings in Africa, Greystoke Mahale is situated on a pristine beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in Tanzania's remote Mahale Mountains National Park. Only reachable via a boat trip across the turquoise waters of the lake, the unmistakable thatched camp is shadowed by forested mountains that offer some of the best chimpanzee viewing in the world. With only six double rooms - called bandas - the camp is exclusive and intimate. Each double-storey banda is privately situated, and is open-fronted to make the most of the beach and lake views. All the wood used in the construction of the camp was reclaimed from retired dhows bought from local villages on the lakeshore. Guests can kick off their shoes and slip into a comfortable provided kikoi, while beach towels are also on hand, as well as water bowls to wash the sand off your feet. A charming ladder made from an old canoe leads up to a wonderful little deck with a day bed. There are no roads in the Mahale National Park, making it one of the most pristine wilderness areas in Tanzania, although the well worn animal paths make this one of the easiest places to get in close contact with chimpanzees. Apart from this once-in-a-lifetime activity, guests can go on boat cruises, dhow cruises and fishing trips on the lake, often viewing hippos submerged in the crystal clear water.

Andersson's Camp is situated in the private Ongava Game Reserve that has an open border with the Etosha National Park, Namibia's premier wildlife destination. The camp offers exclusive game drives in the Ongava Game Reserve and daily excursions into Etosha. The camp is eco-friendly in every way, and has an old world charm, reminiscent of a bygone era. Andersson's Camp has 25 tented suites that fan out from the main farm house along a series of walkways. All around there are terraces, shady trees and a swimming pool for lazy afternoons in camp, observing the constant parade of wildlife looking for sustenance at the camp's waterhole. During the dry months from June to November, the waterhole exerts a magnetic pull on the big herds of game, and forms the centrepiece for visitors looking to spot the nearly 150 species that are found in the park. These include several rare and endangered species such as black rhino, cheetah, black-faced impala, tsessebe, brown hyena, black maned lions and gemsbok. Morning and night drives explore sections of the Ongava Game Reserve and the Etosha National Park. Although there are no fences between the Ongava and Etosha, guests have to enter Etosha from one of the main entrances, which is a 30-minute drive away. Guided walks are offered to guests wishing to stretch their legs and see the reserve from a different perspective.

Nestled amongst the bushes on the banks of the Kafue River, Mawimbi Bush Camp's 3 luxury canvas tents offer ever-changing river views in a truly untamed wilderness. Three large canvas tents located on the riverbank ensure ultimate exclusivity. Decorated in subtle African themes, and tastefully furnished with all basic necessities, each has its own en-suite outdoor bathroom with a hand washbasin and bucket shower. A covered entrance veranda overlooks the river for perfect game viewing and relaxing. Families (up to 2 extra children) can be accommodated in one tent upon request. Activities focus on canoeing trips led by Bernard Calonne, professional canoe guide and co-founder of Mawimbi. Rewarding twice-daily game walks take place in the Park, and excellent birding and fishing is on offer. The Camp is open from April to the start of the rainy season in mid-November. Mawimbi can arrange vehicle based game viewing trips, but this is not their speciality. The best way to incorporate that would be to combine a stay a Mawimbi with a few nights at Kaingu, which is a gentle 5-hour paddle downstream from Mawimbi.
