The Handicapped Scuba Association of South Africa’s (HSASA) 7th annual Dive-a-thon will take place from the 10th to the 12th of March at Bass Lake in Midvaal.

Great white spotted in Sodwana Bay today on Antons and Southern Chain situated on 2mile reef.

These beasts move up the coast of South Africa traveling north up the African coast and pass by ONE of the top dive sites in the world.

Mostly seen on the outskirts where the reef and sand meets up.

These giants are very curious and attracted to the vibrations and noises of the divers, they will come in for a closer look and gently move away and leave.

We have been lucky in the past years with one to two sighting per year from February to May.

Sterkfontein Dam

Sterkfontein is a beautiful place at the foot of the Drakensburg.
The Dam is 16 km long and 7 km wide with lots of inlets. Depth is +/- 90 meters at its deepest.

It is a game reserve with many species including
Oribi, Mountain Buck
Reedbuck
Grey Rhebuck.
Zebra
So you often get to see game at the dive sites.
Its only 3 hours from Johannesburg 23 km from Harrismith. Just a short 3 hour drive to this amazing weekend adventure .
So you can leave after work on a Friday and be there in time for supper.

In the summer months, Sterkfontein Dam is an incredible inland dive site! It boast fish life as well as gorgeous structures and caverns in the rocks and the best part 5-15m visibility.

All year round the views and the hikes around Sterkfontein Dam are just completely breathtaking. From the Escarpment the Drakensburg mountains are just too beautiful for words.

In the winter months, we take in the stunning views in and around Sterkfontein Dam from Kayaks or sailboats.
Course's are also available for Sailing.

We stay at a private residence known as Dragons Nest (A beautiful Castle with many renaissance features) at Amazni Amakhulu which is absolutely stunning! We arrange the rooms accordingly with the groups requirements.

TRUE or FALSE: Practicing skills during a safety stop is a good idea.

Unless you’re combating rough conditions, this is totally TRUE. Some skills, such as mask removal and replacement, can be practiced at any point during a dive, but some skills are better suited for practicing at the end of a dive like breathing from a free-flowing regulator or performing a shared-air ascent with a buddy.

Hopefully you’ll never have to rely on these skills for your safe return to the surface, but in the event that something goes wrong, you’ll be more prepared. (And should you ever be in an emergency, you can count on Divers Alert Network: https://apps.dan.org/join-dan/).

6) Morning person with a can do attitude

There is something ✨magical ✨about the Oceanic Blacktip Sharks, these are our frequent flyers on the Baited Shark Dives.

Best observed diving in an upright position this is a dive unlike any other in the world!

🦈The blacktip shark has a robust, streamlined body with a long, pointed snout and relatively small eyes.
🦈The five pairs of gill slits are longer than those of similar requiem shark species.
🦈Blacktip sharks showing curiosity towards divers has been reported, but they remain at a safe distance.
🦈Under most circumstances, these timid sharks are not regarded as highly dangerous to humans.

In true Blacktip spirit - where we do things differently and exciting - we are doing the first ever, first of its kind, the ultra *Scuba-thon*.

"What is this?" I hear you ask...? Well - what it comes down to... When you dive the 9, 8, 7 and 5 miles at Sodwana - and add then together - you get 29 miles. In road terms this is an “ultra marathon”. Get it?!?!

We will do these 4 dives on *ONE DAY*, back-to-back without coming back to the beach between dives. Obviously we plan for sufficient surface intervals between the 4 dives. Nitrox is a MUST 😉

The Scubathon will take place on Monday 21 March (public holiday) in Sodwana🌊🌊🌊 if you participate you will get a special t-shirt and sticker 💥💦

SO - you can either just come down for the Scubathon - or you can stay the whole weekend and dive. Totally up to you...! Space is limited, so please please please let me know ASAP if you would like to join...!
