Ecosystem engineers @ Heritage View birding retreat
White-browed Sparrow Weavers are exemplary ecosystem engineers 🌿. Their nests not only provide shelter for themselves, but also for other species, including Scaly-feathered Finches, waxbills, and barbets, totaling nine species. Why do they accommodate these species? Likely for mutual protection against predators. Similar to aardvarks, whose burrows are utilized by warthogs, porcupines, and termites, these sociable birds modify their environment in ways that benefit numerous species. 🐦🌳 #EcosystemEngineers #BirdBehavior #Wildlife #Biodiversity #NatureConnections #Conservation #Ornithology #AfricanWildlife

Considerable water level fluctuations occurred at Barberspan over an 8-year period from 2017 to 2024. A good rain season in 2022 led to an overflow into Leeuwpan.⛈️🌧🌤

🎵🔉Sound on to hear the Black-Collared Barbet🔊🌿
The black-collard barbet uses duetting in its day-to-day life. It is commonly rendered as too-doodle too-doodle. This duet is an antiphonal duet. That means that one bird out of the pair sings the first note (too), then the other bird sings the second note (doodle). To bystanders, this does not sound like it comes from two birds. The birds do not sing simultaneously but are synchronized in their duets❤️💙🎶.
Die rooikophoutkapper gebruik duette in hul daaglikse lewe. Dit word algemeen as "too-doodle too-doodle" weergegee. Hierdie duet is 'n antifonale duet.
At 5:45 this morning we were woken by the call of the majestic African Fish Eagle. Come stay to experience this with us!
