On 3 August 1991 the ill-fated Greek cruise ship, Oceanos, left the Port of East London en route to Durban. She would never arrive.

The 40-year-old French-built passenger liner sailed into 75km/h winds and swells reaching almost 10 metres along the Transkei coast.

By that evening, the storm had worsened significantly and the vessel was tossed about with such force that crockery and cutlery slid off the tables and potted plants reportedly fell over.

Later that night the generator short-circuited, causing a power-failure which quickly led to the loss of the ship.

Oceanos sank off the Transkei coast early on Sunday, 4 August and a large-scale air rescue operation was launched.

Miraculously, given the treacherous conditions, no lives were lost in what has been described as one of the greatest maritime rescue operations ever.

Oceanos Lifeboat No 5, which was instrumental in saving the lives of scores of passengers, is being preserved at the East London Museum.

More information about the Oceanos as well as the many other ill-fated vessels that were shipwrecked along the Eastern Cape coast, can be found in the Museum's excellent maritime gallery.
