Why the tour?

Between 2016 and 2017 I spent a year in Fez, Morocco. The intention was to study Arabic in an Arabic-speaking environment. My flight home was booked for three months after my arrival. I extended this, twice.

As I fell in love with the old city of Fez, it became a symbol of excellence, the embodiment of Islam’s living tradition and a repository of Islam’s past scientific, artistic and scholarly achievements. And while it is no longer a powerhouse of knowledge, art and science, the traces of its glorious past are seen and felt every day in the old cities. I found God on street corners. I found the spirit of the law deeply embedded in the hearts of men, even when the letter was forgotten. I found human connection as I purchased my milk and bread. I found children coming to mosques to play, even if they didn’t pray. I found that women were not a footnote, but a central part of Islam’s social and religious life. I found sincere concern from almost strangers. I found the secret to Islam’s melody and it was otherworldly.

And now I'm hoping to share some of this In shaa Allah.
