Exciting News from Today’s Trip!

Despite a late start due to the tides, today’s adventure was spectacular! As we welcomed our guests aboard, we set out from Kleinbaai Harbour with high hopes and anticipation. Our first thrilling encounter was with two magnificent Southern Right whales, gracefully moving through the bay.

We then visited Slashfin, Marine Dynamics’ Shark Cage Diving vessel, where we were treated to the awe-inspiring sight of Bronze Whaler sharks up close. These curious creatures investigated the divers in the cage and our boat, offering fantastic photo opportunities.

Next, we ventured to the island system. At Geyser Rock, the Cape fur seals were either basking in the sun or swimming in Shark Alley. On Dyer Island, we spotted the endangered African Penguins on the boulders and swimming in the bay.

The highlight of our trip was a breathtaking encounter with a humpback whale in the deep waters. What an incredible day!

Don’t miss out on these amazing experiences. Book now for whale season at +27 82 801 8014 or email [email protected].

World Albatross Day 2024

Did you know that the Shy Albatross, despite its name, is a master of long-distance flight, covering thousands of miles across the Southern Ocean? We often encounter these majestic seabirds during our winter months. The team African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary - APSS has rehabilitated a few of these incredible birds over the years.

Join us in celebrating as we marvel at the grace and resilience of the Shy Albatross. These ocean nomads inspire us with their epic journeys and remind us of the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems.

The Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses (ACAP) announces its theme for World Albatross Day, 19 June 2024. This year's focus is "Marine Protected Areas – Safeguarding our Oceans".

At Dyer Island Conservation Trust, we're committed to supporting initiatives like Marine Protected Areas to ensure a safe haven for albatrosses and other marine wildlife.

Species we encounter on our marine tours around the greater Dyer Island area with Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island Cruises include Indian & Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatross, and the incredible Shy Albatross.

Let's continue to explore, protect, and educate for the love of our oceans! 🌍💙

Last Saturday, the last trip since, we launched a little bit earlier than usual to avoid some bad weather coming in later that day. However, it was certainly worth it!

We followed the coastline to our sister company Marine Dynamics, where we were lucky enough to get some lovely sightings of some Bronze whaler sharks.

Thousands of Cape Fur seals on Geyser Rock were ready to welcome us, it was quite a cold morning, so most of them were cuddling up on land. At Sponge Bay by Dyer Island, we successfully spotted some African penguins amongst many Cape cormorants.

We ventured into the deeper waters where we encountered a couple of Shy albatrosses and other pelagic bird species. On top of that, a Humpback whale was waiting for us: a stunning encounter that left all of us in awe. On our way back to the harbour we found a raft of African penguins working hard in search of their breakfast.

To say the least, we had another sunny day full of sightings ahead of us!

Heading over to the Shallows, we got the chance to stop by our sister company Marine Dynamics and their Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin. Several Bronze Whaler sharks were already investigating divers in their cage which allowed us to get some immediate good views of this incredible species.

We moved into Pearly Beach to try and spot some whales. Not long after we spotted two Southern Right whales! Happy to say they are slowly but surely returning to South African coastal waters! On our way back to the harbour we came across two beautiful Humpback whales. They were incredibly relaxed which gave us an amazing opportunity to check their beauty.

Celebrating World Turtle Day

Today, South Africa joins the global community in celebrating World Turtle Day! Our oceans are home to five of the world's seven marine turtle species: Leatherback, Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, and the elusive Olive Ridley. Each of these magnificent creatures plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, from controlling jellyfish populations to helping seagrass beds flourish.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting these vulnerable species, all of which are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. By increasing conservation efforts, we aim to ensure that future generations can continue to marvel at these ancient mariners.

At Marine Dynamics, we're dedicated to educating and involving our community in these conservation efforts. Join us in our mission to protect and preserve our marine life. Together, we can make a difference!

The Dyer Island Marine Big 5 cruise is often referred to as the "Serengeti of the Sea" because of the incredible diversity and abundance of marine wildlife that can be observed in this area, similar to the rich biodiversity found in Africa's Serengeti National Park.

Here are some reasons why this comparison is made:

1) Diverse Marine Life
The waters around Dyer Island are home to an impressive array of marine species, including the Marine Big 5: whales, sharks, dolphins, seals, and penguins. Other species like sunfish, stingrays and amazing seabirds like petrels, gannets, swift terns, albatros, cormorants and many many more. Bird lover's paradise.

2) Unique Ecosystem
Just as the Serengeti is a unique and vital ecosystem on land, the marine area around Dyer Island is a critical habitat for many marine species. The island's ecosystem supports breeding and feeding grounds for numerous species, making it a hotspot for marine biodiversity.

3) Conservation Efforts Like the Serengeti, the Dyer Island area is a focus of intense conservation efforts. Dyer Island Conservation Trust work tirelessly to protect the marine environment and its inhabitants, enhancing the area's status as a haven for wildlife.

4) Educational and Immersive Experience The cruises offer an educational experience, where expert guides share knowledge about the marine environment and the importance of conservation, much like guided safaris in the Serengeti provide insights into the ecosystem and wildlife conservation.

This combination of diverse wildlife, a unique ecosystem, and a commitment to conservation makes the Dyer Island Marine Big 5 cruise deserving of the title "Serengeti of the Sea."

Exciting marine big 5 sightings around Dyer Island yesterday

Our trips were packed with incredible wildlife sightings, that left everyone in awe

Several endangered African Penguins could be seen on Dyer Island roaming around or on the lookout on top of the boulders. Cape fur seals were sunbathing on the island watching our boat pass by or cooling down in Shark Alley. On the first trip, we were very excited to have spotted a Bryde’s whale cruising in the deep as well as a super active Humpback whale breaching!

The second trip was not any less lucky. A second time we got to see the Humpback whale showing off!

Bronze whaler sharks could unfortunately only be seen by trip number two but instead our early trip got to see a pod of the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphins. What a successful day with numerous exciting sightings!

Today, on , let's shine a light on our African Penguin and the Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin, a symbol of marine species in need and who need our collective voices!

On Endangered Species Day, let's reflect on our impact on the planet and take action to turn the tide of extinction.

The African penguin, endemic to Namibia and South Africa, is facing a crisis. There is less than 9000 pairs left in South Africa. The African penguin is disappearing from the landscape everywhere in Southern Africa but the situation on Dyer Island is dire. Once home to a vibrant African penguin colony with an estimated 25 000 breeding pairs, the numbers have dwindled to less than 1000 breeding pairs in 2023.

What do we lose if the African penguin disappear from our wild seascape? Do we just lose an iconic, cute beach waddling, black & white flightless bird that provides great entertain for those thousands of visitors spotting them at the land-based colonies on our coast? Unfortunately not, all species have a role to play. Bottomline - the large decreases in seabird populations, as have been observed for African Penguins in South Africa have detrimental consequences for ecosystem functioning.

This will impact all of us, not just the penguins.
It is not a contest between the fisheries and the penguins. The ocean is one system. We are all part of that system.

Obviously, out there in the big blue, the penguins are battling to get food. There is very little that we can do about that, except alert you to the fact that Sardines are now on the SASSI orange list, and you should think twice before you eat sardines.

Can we weather this storm? Conservation and the fishing industry must work together towards a mutually beneficial strategy. Responsible fisheries should promote protection of living aquatic resources and their environments and coastal areas. Although current closures are in place, they are not aligned with the preferred penguin hunting grounds can. Is there the will to make this change? WE DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE.

This Endangered Species Day, let's commit to protecting not only the iconic African penguin but the biodiversity and all other species in this special area.
Together, we can make a difference.

What a day we had out at sea today! After we left Kleinbaai Harbour behind us, very active sharks could be seen around the Marine Dynamics Shark cage diving vessel Slashfin. Cape fur seals were not just seen on Geyser Rock and Shark Alley, but also along the way. The endangered African Penguins were sunbathing on Dyer Island or even seen inside the bay swimming. The first trip was quite lucky to have seen some Bottlenose dolphins. Several pelagic birds have led us the way and we were thrilled to have encountered Bryde's and Humpback whales! Without a doubt, both species were quite active today which excited guests and crew alike!
