Overlooking The Island in Groot Brakrivier. Island View Holiday Apartment is a luxury, fully equipped and serviced 2 bedroom apartment overlooking The Island in Groot Brakrivier, gateway to the beautiful Garden Route. There is ample parking behind an automated gate with excellent lighting and full security. Solar power and unlimited high speed internet are part of the package. The apartment is on

the banks of the Groot Brak River estuary just before it enters the ocean, and a short walk across The Island from the beach. Guests have use of a canoe, which they can launch from the private jetty. The river has some great fishing for Grunter, Leervis and Mullet. The area is rich in bird life and is popular with bird watchers. One of the pleasures is to lie in bed and watch herons, kingfishers and other bird life while enjoying a cup of coffee. Enjoy spectacular sunsets while braaing on the deck which overlooks the river only a few metres away. The master bedroom has a super comfortable queen size bed and the second bedroom has 2 singles, which can be put together to make a king size bed should guests prefer. A huge bath and walk in shower complete the accommodation. The open plan kitchen has modern fittings with all the equipment needed to prepare a gourmet meal or a quick snack. The lounge, has a comfortable leather couch which opens up to become a queen size bed if needed. A sliding door opens out onto a protected, north facing private deck. A number of restaurants and shops are within walking distance. And, in the vicinity are world class game lodges with Big 5 game viewing. Groot Brakrivier is situated midway between George and Mossel Bay, which are each around 30km away. Both cities have all the shopping, medical and other requirements of modern life. George airport, which has numerous daily flights to all the major centres, is 15 minutes drive along the N2 highway. There are 2 dogs on the property, so sadly we can't accommodate pets, with the exception of legitimate service dogs.

Winter in this part of the world means aloes in bloom, and plenty of them. It's a spectacular sight for sure. This specimen was spotted alongside the road near Groot Brakrivier.

We had a visitor of a different kind recently. The beautifully restored Class 24, 74 ton steam locomotive no 3655, "Jenny" and just as beautifully restored 1930's era coaches operated by Atlantic Rail are a regular sight during the holiday period.

If you are looking for a great breakfast, with awesome views and reasonable prices, look no further than the restaurant at Seeplaas. It's a 5 minute drive from our apartment so ideal for a brekkie stop. While there, spend a bit of time exploring the art gallery, with it's collection of excellent works from local artists.

The Groot Brak Market, held on the first Saturday of the month is growing all the time. Local produce and crafts, bargains and interesting food stalls make it a worthwhile place to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

Groot Brak is something of an arty kind of place with some well known artists living and exhibiting in town. This is one of 8 sculptures by world renowned sculptor, Anton Smit (Anton Smit Sculpture Park) that can be seen around Groot Brak. It's from his "In Moment" series and can be seen, along with some others, close to our apartment, overlooking the estuary. The bird and ball just happened to be there, they aren't part of the original 😉 but I thought it was quite a cool photo.

If you enjoy Saturday markets and feel like a bit of a road trip, Sedgefield, a 60km scenic drive along the N2 highway will make you very happy. There are 3 from which to choose, a couple of minutes walk apart, and each one with it's own unique vibe. The Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market, the Mosaic Village & Outdoor Market and Scarab Craft Market will keep you entertained for a good couple of hours. There's craft beer and food at Sedgefield Brewery which is open on weekdays as well. The markets also feature local musicians showing their talents.

The Groot Brak River mouth recently after good rains resulted in the mouth being opened after being closed to the sea for some time. Locals always get very excited when the mouth is breached, allowing the tide to flow. Because of the Wolwedans Dam built on the Groot Brak River a view km above the town, the river doesn't flow all year round. In the summer months, hot weather and stagnant water result in algae growth. The opening of the river mouth flushes the stagnant water from the system and allows for the inflow of fresh sea water. Always cause for celebration!

What an awesome day, the river mouth is open, clear blue sky, and visitors to our beautiful village already enjoying themselves on the beach at 8.30am.
