An article in the Daily Mail about Chintsa Beach describes exactly why we are spending so much time in SA now. I don’t have to imagine. I am here and everyday I wake up looking over that beach.

“Close your eyes. Imagine a place where you feel happy. Where are you? What do you see? Hear? Touch, taste, smell? Connect with your body and all its senses …”
I’ve done several variations of this exercise over the years (belonging to writing groups and being in therapy will have that effect), but my answer is always the same. The beach at Chintsa in the Eastern Cape.
It’s difficult for me to describe this beach: I connect with it through my spirit, rather than in words. The sand is, well, sandy (it was only when I visited Brighton’s stabby pebbles, that I realised this wasn’t a given); the waves are sometimes a little wild (none of that gentle Mediterranean nonsense), but never too scary; the water can be bracing, but it is warm enough for swimming.
In short, it’s a proper beach; the kind you conjure up when you hold a seashell to your ear and hear the faint echo of the roaring waves.

2. Buccaneers, Chintsa
The first comment I made to the receptionist in Buccaneers Hostel in Chinsta, which slipped out of my mouth just as she showed me into their ‘cheapest’ dormitory was, “You’re got to be kidding me!”. The view was literally insane. It was the best view from a hostel dormitory that I have ever seen and remains one of my top hostels in the world.

The fact that it was only costing me about 8 euro a night was the real cherry on top. Buccaneers is a bit different from all the other hostels in that it is more like an all-inclusive resort than a simple hostel. They organize daily activities for guests such as Volley Ball tournaments and Treasure Hunts and they offer free boxed wine to everyone at 4pm everyday to try and get solo travelers mingling with everyone else. They offer horse riding, game drives, surf lessons and a range of other activities to ensure your days are full of fun. There are also massages on offer, a pool-side bar and restaurant, a swimming pool, volley ball courts, canoes and surf boards you can use and even yoga sessions in the mornings.

The ‘View of Africa’ restaurant, where they serve up delicious breakfasts and family style group dinners, has one of the most incredible views you will come across and will ensure that some days, like me, you will eat your breakfast overlooking the lagoon and bay and probably stay put for the whole day.

Let’s make things safe for all our holiday makers that will be coming this summer.
We do not want any super spreader events / facilities in Chintsa.
We can make our buisinesses safe and still create an opportunity for people to come and wind down after this horrendous year.
Especially food preparation and organizing the layout of e.g. tables. Staff wearing masks when handling or giving out food. Lots of hand sanitizer on entry and e.g at entry to bathrooms and perhaps even a small one on each table. We can make it pretty and creative.
Let’s stay safe and avoid another lockdown. A super spreader could shut down the whole of Chintsa for the summer but this can be avoided if we all work together. We have the power as a community.

Cintsa Horses took part in the Move One Million march but did it on their rescue horses. Mike Hood took the drone footage showing our neigbour hood. Its winter here and very dry but it is still beautiful. Well done Georgie and Penny of Cintsa Horses. 🌼🌹🌈🤩🌞
