January 11 to 19, we will travel to the north east hiking and camping in the Danakil Depression and by the Dallol Salt Lake.

2024 Drive the Silk Road
【Yamchun Fort, Wakhan Valley, Tajikistan】
Located between the modern border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, at elevations ranging from 3,037 meters in Ishkashim to 4,923 meters at the Wakhjir Pass, the remote and barren Wakhan Valley was once a thriving corridor along the Silk Road.
Ruins of caravanserais, stupas, forts, towers, and palaces littering the whole valley testify to a glorious past.
Traders from near and far have been plying the Silk Road for millennia.
During the Kushan Empire, many fortresses were built with the dual purpose of protecting traders from raiders and protecting the empire from neighbouring tribes.

【2024 Drive the Silk Road】Murghab, Pamir Highway
Towards the end of Wakhan Corridor, we reached Murghab.
Murghab is a high-mountain village in the eastern part of Tajikistan, located at an elevation of 3600 m above sea level.
There is one hotel in the village, and we were the first group of the year.
It is not an easy place to live… … vegetation is scarce on such elevation, in winter, temperature drops down to -40°C and in summer, 40°C with high UV.
During the time of the “Great Game”, when Russian and British empires were struggling for the influence in Central Asia, Russian troops arrived here in 1892 and organized a frontier post.
They first built small houses to survive harsh winter, and later continued with other constructions. This is how the history of Murgab began.
Later, Murghab village became one of the points on Pamir Highway and served as a center of geological exploration in eastern part of Tajikistan.

2024 Drive the Silk Road: 【Wakhan Corridor】
Village in Wakhan ... ... early morning, light snow.
Walking around the village, there was a large dog sitting on top of the wall, watching in silence, soft eyes, no hostility.
Wood burning in stove, small house is slowly getting warm, made a “bed” on the platform where meals are conducting.
This peaceful, sweet place, Wakhan, will not be forgotten.
