The soft rustle of leaves shattered the silence of the early morning as Ezulweni stepped into the open. We remained frozen in in our sleeping spots.

Ezulweni... Sir.... was in the open, 10m away, ears out, head up, looking down at us for what felt like an eternity. Unsure of what lay before him, he made sure to give us a good once over before bolding steeping forward for further investigations.

Being in such close proximity of such a magnificent animal is a profoundly humbling experience, one that is able to put many things into perspective. And when he makes eye contact it becomes very clear that you are in fact in his world and should do your best to respect that.

The moment dragged one until he was satisfied with what he saw. Then, just as quietly as he appeared, he disappeared off down by the river.

However, his curiosity had not yet been satisfied and he reappeared approximately 20 minutes later for another close inspection. Again time stood still, as he watched us for a minute or so, before turning and silently moving away.

Three days walking on the pathways of giants. Three nights sleeping under giant sky's. Three days exploring the wilds on the Balule Game Reserve on foot, going places not many people have gone before. Joins us and become a participant in nature rather than an observer. Only on trail!

I saw the Double-banded Sandgrouse explode from the ground in front of me as it took flight. I immediately froze and started searching the ground ahead knowing it had just taken off from either a nest or chicks.
My guests crowded up to try see what i was looking at. My reaction was an immediate freeze, dont move..... then i explained that the eggs and or chicks are extremely criptic and hard to see so we might stand on them without noticing.
Everybody started scanning to our left where we saw the adult take flight ... nothing, a few steps forward, scan, nothing.... a few steps forward, "look here, what is this?" from behind me. I turned round to look and saw the folks looking at the ground. I looked down and immediately saw the chick only a couple of centimeters from my back-ups foot.
We were amazed at how camouflage and small these tiny chicks were. At the same time mortified we had not seen them and nearly stood on them.
Photo's were taken and we tiptoed away from them leaving them be for mom to return. Only a few meters further on we found the nest with the opened egg shell left behind.

The Black Rhino stopped with a grunt, five meters from Megan's (my back-up) tent.
A couple of secounds earlier we had been sitting peacefully around the fire chatting. Now we were holding our breath not wanting to make a move least we attract her attention. Megan was inside her open tent only a few meters from mommy Rhino , while other Megan was in hers and Sahara and myself behind a log between the tents. It felt like the female was there for hours but in reality it was only a few minutes. When she did move it was another rush forward to try scare the tents. Nobody moved an inch or even blinked an eye.....Another "half hour" of starring before she started backing off step by step.
You could almost hear us all take a breath....

We have space avaliable on an upcoming Balule backpack primitive trail 23-26th October. We are also opening up two spots for two Apprentice Trails Guides to walk as back-up. This is an ideal opportunity to accumulate "workplace" hours and encounters by backing up Bruce.
