Solitary ,elusive, secretive and shy, leopards being that very special big cat all of whom come to African wants to see🐾 Tracks in the sand building up excitement searching for this majestic big cat. Female leopard represented in the image above being a more slender, elongated track than that of a male leopard🐾❤️ absolutely love these animals and getting to witness a small part of what makes them truly special creatures.
Must be one of my favourite parts of guiding. Tracks giving you a guideline of what could possibly be in a certain area. Just like birding another passion of guiding, knowing your track and pausing for a brief moment while identifying them. Paying attention to your surroundings you might be surprised what pops up. Track being of a spotted hyaena you’re more frequently seen hyaena in the bush as they are dominant in their clang group structure. Dominated by an alpha female. Compared to your more shy solitary brown hyaena. Spotted hyaenas having a two lobed back pad unlike that of cats (lion,leopard) which have three lobes on their back pad. They have a slightly bigger front foot than their back foot, this is to hold up their massive upper body giving them a slanted appearance. They have kidney shaped toes unlike a more rounded toe structure in cats. They also present their nail imprint in their track. Whereas lions and leopards have retractable claws that don’t show in their tracks. Love hyaenas as they are the clean up crew of the bush just like everything in the bush all species playing an important role in maintaining the perfect balance. 🐾

What are you searching for in the bush.When out on safari or even self driving in the bush. Especially if you’re the first one in the park. Paying careful attention to tar roads that intersect sand roads and on sand road junctions. As reading the ground is like reading the morning newspaper, it gives you a good indication on the ground of what might have happened the previous night in the bush. Follow tracks and pay careful attention to the sounds of the bush when doing this you could be close to that waking lion pride, moving pack of wild dogs or leopard moving in the cooler temperatures of the morning trying to hunt or marking their territory. 🐾🐆

Listen to the sounds of the bush, the wind whistling through the grass, the birds announcing their presence after surviving another night and sometimes no sound at all just silence. Dead trees have all been through the change of the different seasons and still witness the different seasons that come and go. They are a symbol of the past and tell stories of events that’s have shaped the landscape. From sleeping prides of lions to the comfort of daily resting places for leopards surveying its surroundings. Seeds are dispersed by the elephants and birds feeding, planting the seeds for new trees to thrive and transform the landscape once again.

Imagine If you wake up 5 minutes too early and have your cup of coffee 5 minutes too long, what you see in the day will be completely different by just missing those 5 minutes. Take your time experiencing everything from small to big, and everything in between that because you will not have the exact same experiences and memories every single day on Safari.
Rooted Bush Safaris is situated a 30 min drive from main Hoedspruit Town. The farm is approximately 261 hectares, with the undulating hills it is closer to 360 hectares. The property boasts a variety of plains game with approximately 500 bird species in and around the area. The camp allocates for SELF CATERING IN A GROUP SETTING , with the feeling of ‘owning your own lodge’. Stay in one of our glamping styled tents with an on-suite bathroom. With tent flaps rolled up, drifting asleep and waking up, brings in nature and soaking up the sounds of the African bush. From the farm, it’s a 40-minute drive to Phalaborwa Gate and approximately an hour and ten minutes to Orpen Gate into the world-famous Kruger National Park. On a clear day, enjoy an ice-cold beverage with friends and family whilst sitting on the main lodge deck overlooking a boasting view of the Klein Drakensburg.
Experience the big FIVE with full day trips into the KRUGER. Note : this experience has to be pre booked and is paid separately on arrival to the camp.
The camp allocates for maximum 8 guest and a minimum of 4, with minimum stay of 2 nights. As the camp is SELF CATERING in a group setting, Facilities are provided in the main lodge, boma and braai facilities outside overlooking the beautiful surrounds.
