Today we celebrate International Vulture Awareness Day to pay tribute to these amazing birds who play a vital role cleaning up the environment.

Did you know that when these scavengers feed on dead animal carcasses, they are cleaning up the environment by removing harmful pathogens and toxins which carry disease?
Like everything in nature, healthy ecosystem services rely on delicate mutually beneficial relationships. When we reintroduced cheetahs and lions to Liwonde National Park in Malawi in 2017, four species of critically endangered vulture returned to the area almost immediately after a nearly 20-year absence! With the return of these cats, the number of carcasses increased, creating a whole new restaurant for vultures to revisit. Vultures disappeared, along with cheetahs and lions, from Liwonde and other protected areas in Malawi due to a poaching crisis in the 1990s and early 2000s. But as we help to revive protected areas, by reintroducing key species, we are seeing vultures given a second chance too.
