Terraforce: A tried and tested retaining wall system for over four decades!
TERRAFORCEĀ® is a well-known and award-winning Cape Town-based company that offers interlocking concrete blocks manufactured exclusively by licensed manufacturers (retaining wall blocks) for environmentally friendly earth retaining walls and erosion control.
Terraforce Retaining Walls pioneered the hollow, reversible interlocking retaining wall system in 1979, that is unmatched in its versatility, both in application and elevation. Suitable for commercial and residential precast block walls, small or large.
Terraforce is a member of the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) in South Africa and adheres to the Canadian and US international Standard Specification for Loadbearing Concrete Masonry Units, following a successful ICBO evaluation in 2002 (now ICC-ES, a leading US nonprofit, limited liability company that does technical evaluations of building products, components, methods, and materials). The system was also extensively tested by Hawkins Hawkins & Osborne Consulting Engineers, South Africa in 1992, resulting in a comprehensive design and specification manual and user guide.
Composite retaining wall design and construction procedures with Terraforce blocks have been subjected to rigorous laboratory tests. These were conducted on a large-scale test apparatus to evaluate the mechanical performance of, among others, the connection between blocks and geogrids. In all tests the primary mode of failure was rupture of the geogrid outside the blocks and performance was found to be above average.
The TerraforceĀ® retaining system offers over 40 years of experience and extensive product development ā

Stairs and seating under construction!
Exciting to visit this site in Durbanville where a primary school decided to upgrade their outdoor sports facility to accommodate 2 brand new Astro turf fields and 2 grassed sports fields all on different levels of a hill side plot.
They decided to work with Decorton Retaining Systems , who have years of experience installing the TerraforceĀ® system. The 4x4 Stepā¢ block stairs and seating provide the retaining required to make this a successful project.

#gogreen with Terracrete
Use the TerracreteĀ® grass block to create your eco-friendly water channel.
For maximum environmental benefit, the #Terracrete blocks were filled with a bio-charcoal material and mushroom spores, the former to absorb pollutants in the water and the latter to recharge the charcoal and keep it fit for purpose.
In addition plants were then chosen for their water purification properties to complete this Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) designed to protect a new housing estate in the Vlakkeland, Western Cape from water flows during heavy downpours.

Heavy Duty retaining walls with Terraforce
We are proud licensed suppliers of Terraforce blocks!
This Terraforce wall, with a face area of 2700 mĀ³ and average height of 9m, was completed in 4 months. The design is based on Terraforce L13 blocks placed on a 25Mpa concrete foundation and built to full height with chainages of about 60m.
The lowest - 12 - rows of blocks are filled with a cement stabilized load bearing mix while the fabric reinforced backfill is made up of 5% cement stabilized soil (mixed with a T.L.B, placed with a Telescopic Loader) and compacted to 93% mod AASHTO. Light and heavy grades of woven geofabric were specified depending on their position within the wall.
Insitu concrete shear keys were installed every row with fabric layers. All geotextiles were pre-tensioned in warp direction before placement of backfill.

Retaining wall for a very steep slope
Luxury residential development, Bakoven, Cape Town
Limited space and steep slopes called for specialist geotechnical engineering in the construction of concrete block wall structures to retain a granite embankment which was cut to create a building platform for a new six-storey apartment block.
Following an assessment, the geotechnical engineer recommended that two of the three main concrete block walls be provided with 300kN tie-back anchorages and concrete waler beams. Geofabric reinforcement was not an option due to space limitations. Steel reinforced, the waler beams measured 350mm thick and about 1000mm high. Constructed on the upper and lower wall sections they span the full width of the embankment face. Further reinforcement was achieved by filling the blockwork in the lower half of the terracing with steel reinforced concrete. Free-draining sand was used to fill the space between the blocks and the embankment. The total combined height of the back-yard walls is 12.4m. The
lower wall is the highest at 5.6m. The middle wall tops 3.7m and the upper wall 3.1m. Each wall was built at an angle of 75Ė.
A sub-surface drainage system was built into the design to handle the percolation of water from the slope and to prevent the build-up of pore pressure. In addition, rain water flowing off the mountain slope is captured in a stone filled trapezoidal concrete channel which drains away from the wall into the storm water drainage system. Perforated 100mm pipes were installed at the bottom of the fill material behind each wall. These drain into the municipal storm water system.
Fire escape staircases on each side of the property were built as part of the retaining wall structures using precast step blocks.
