Our hearts are absolutely broken at the news of the fatal road accident involving The Carltonville football club that claimed the lives of 4young football players amongst 5 on Sunday evening, around 9pm. It’s depressing to even think about it. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families, close friends & loved ones of those who lost their lives. May the souls of these young dreamers eternally sleep peacefully.

Japan constructed a $20 billion Airport in the ocean, but it is now sinking.

Japan’s Kansai International Airport, located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, Japan, is an impressive feat of engineering that opened in 1994 at a cost of $20 billion. Built to alleviate land constraints, the airport was constructed on soft, alluvial soil, which was expected to settle over time. However, the rate of sinking turned out to be faster than initially predicted. To mitigate the issue, engineers installed thousands of steel pilings to stabilize the ground. Despite these measures, the island continues to subside by several centimeters each year.

Ongoing efforts, including raising runways and adjusting infrastructure, have helped keep the airport functional. However, the high costs and continuous maintenance required pose long-term challenges. Kansai Airport remains an essential hub for international travel, but its future depends on the success of these engineering interventions. The airport’s situation highlights the complexity of building large infrastructure projects in challenging environments.

Mapungubwe interpretation Centre 🇿🇦

The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, designed by architect PETER RICH, is a remarkable example of earth construction that combines sustainability with cultural and social significance. Situated at the confluence of South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, the center celebrates the ancient.

Mapungubwe civilization, which thrived between 1200 and 1300 AD. Rich’s decision to use earth as a primary building material was inspired by the natural landscape and the region’s cultural heritage.

The use of earth construction not only minimized the environmental impact but also reflected the architect’s commitment to sustainable design. Locally sourced materials, including stabilized earth tiles, were used to build the domes and vaulted ceilings. This choice allowed the center to blend harmoniously with its surroundings, echoing the mesa’s rugged beauty while providing natural insulation to regulate temperatures within the building. The traditional Catalan timbrel vaulting technique, which uses pressed earth tiles, required minimal steel reinforcement, further reducing the center's ecological footprint.

Rich's approach also had a profound social impact. He collaborated with local communities, training unemployed workers in the production of the tiles used in construction. This initiative not only provided valuable skills to the workers but also empowered them to continue using these techniques in nearby villages, fostering long-term economic and cultural benefits for the region. The project became a symbol of community resilience, as the workers' craftsmanship lives on in the architecture of their own homes.

In designing the Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, Rich drew on motifs from the region’s ancient culture, which are carved into stones found on-site. These motifs inspired the fluid, dome-like shapes of the center, which tell the story of the region through a series of open, light-filled spaces.

The Drakensberg is the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, which encloses the central Southern African plateau. The Great Escarpment reaches its greatest elevation – 2,000 to 3,482 metres (6,562 to 11,424 feet) within the border region of South Africa and Lesotho.

The Drakensberg escarpment stretches for more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) from the Eastern Cape Province in the South, then successively forms, in order from south to north, the border between Lesotho and the Eastern Cape and the border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal Province. Thereafter it forms the border between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, and next as the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Province. The escarpment winds north from there, through Mpumalanga, where it includes features such as the Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, and God's Window. It then extends farther north to Hoedspruit in southeastern Limpopo where it is known as 'Klein Drakensberg' by the Afrikaner. From Hoedspruit it extends west to Tzaneen, also in Limpopo Province, where it is known as the Wolkberg Mountains and Iron Crown Mountain. At 2,200 m (7,200 ft) above sea level, the Wolkberg is the highest elevation in Limpopo. The escarpment extends west again and at Mokopane it is known as the Strydpoort Mountains..
