Tucked away under the canopy of an ancient Tamboti tree, Morukuru Owner’s House is set on the banks of Madikwe’s Marico River.

The property offers a bespoke bush experience, operating on a sole-use and fully inclusive basis. Your party will have the place to itself, free to enjoy the adventure however you choose to.

During Madikwe's dry Winter months, water is incredibly scarce, and animals are forced to congregate around the reserve's few remaining perennial water sources. Places like Inkwe Pan, an isolated waterhole in the west of the Reserve, are hotspots for a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife that rely on this permanent water source throughout the year. This means that locating wildlife during the Winter months is somewhat easier than in Summer when water is far more abundant due to the region's Summer rainfall.

Have you ever wondered why Madikwe's elephants often appear reddish in colour instead of just regular grey? 🤔

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to a very distinct type of soil resulting from the region's underlying geology, which is characterised by a series of ancient rock formations, including granites, gneisses, and shales. The distinctive red colour of the soil is primarily due to its high iron oxide (hematite) content, a mineral containing iron and oxygen. Over time, the iron in these rocks undergoes the process of oxidation, during which the iron basically rusts, resulting in the reddish colouration we see in the soil.

Whenever elephants use the soil to dust themselves or roll in the mud, their skin takes on the same red hues as the soil, giving Madikwe's elephants their unique red skin tones.
