Happy World Rhino Day!

Here are some fun facts about these beautiful animals.

1. White and black rhinos are actually the same colour
Despite the names, both species of African rhino have a grey skin colour.

2. Rhinos love plants
Rhinos are herbivores (plant-eaters) and have to eat a lot each day to be full.

3. The name rhinoceros means ‘nose horn’
It comes from Ancient Greek words: rhino (nose), ceros (horn).

4. Only elephants are bigger than white rhinos
White rhinos are the second-largest land mammal in the world

5. A crash of rhinos
A group of rhinos is known as a herd, or a crash!

Happy International Vulture Awareness Day.

To celebrate these magnificent creatures here are some fun facts.

A vulture is a bird of prey that scavenges on carrion. There are approximately 23 species in the world and of those 23 there are approximately 9 species in South Africa.

Vultures are relatively social birds.

Vultures play a critical role in the ecosystem. They are equipped with a digestive system that gets rid of harmful diseases.

Vultures have a good sense of sight and smell that helps them find carcasses miles away from them. Because of this they often spend time flying high to find their next meal.

Happy World Elephant Day! To celebrate here are some fun facts about these magnificent giants.

1) There are three different species of elephant – the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Elephants are known for their large ears, tusks made of ivory and their trunks.

2) Elephants are the world’s largest land animal! Male African elephants can reach 3m tall and weigh between 4,000 -7,500kg. Asian elephants are slightly smaller, reaching 2.7m tall and weighing 3,000– 6,000kg.

3) There’s an easy way to tell the African elephants apart from their Asian cousins – their ears! African elephants have large ears shaped like the continent of Africa! Asian elephants’ ears are smaller and shaped like India. Cool, huh?

4) You can tell a lot about an elephant by looking at their tusks! Elephant tusks never stop growing, so enormous tusks can be a sign of an old elephant. Both male and female African elephants grow tusks, but only male Asian elephants grow them. A tusk-less adult elephant is likely to be a female Asian elephant.

5) Until recently, African Forest elephants were thought to be a subspecies of the African elephant, but new research discovered that they are actually a separate species entirely. These elephants live in the tropical forests of Africa’s Congo Basin. They have straighter tusks and more rounded ears than Savannah elephants.

Happy World Lion Day! To celebrate today here are some fun facts about these incredible creatures. 1. Lions usually live in groups of 10 or 15 animals called prides. 2. An adult male’s roar can be heard up to 8km away. 3. A female lion needs 5kg of meat a day. A male needs 7kg or more a day. 4. The name for a baby lion is a cub, whelp or lionet. 5. Lions go on the hunt for food mostly from dusk till dawn. Female lions do 85-90% of the prides hunting, whilst the male lions patrol the territory and protect the pride.
