As we, and so many friends around the globe, sit in lockdown, quarantine & isolation, we are deeply concerned for the travel industry and all those who rely on visitors to our country. The many people who generate an income and the informal traders who rely on the sales of their goods to feed their families.
Our president has stepped up to the leadership-plate and we are grateful to see our nation getting behind the common goal of slowing down the rate of infections.

As we sit in "iso", I can feel the itch starting to tingle in my feet, and I can imagine it building-up in thousands of itchy feet around the world. People will explore again and journeys of discovery will bring us all closer together soon. For now we do what we can by staying home and letting nature take a break from all of us.

When we worked in South Luangwa, Zambia, Susie and I were amazed at how wild and untouched it felt. This was partly due to the fact that the majority of the park becomes inaccessible in the rainy season and so human impact is kept low for many months of the year. All our parks and reserves are getting a break like this now, yet the animals are continuing undisturbed, as they have for millions of years!

One thing is for certain. Those who travel to Southern Africa after this, will get a welcome like never before. Smiles will all be genuine and "thanks" 100% sincere! Sending our best to you all and hoping to see you all soon...
Much Love

A stunning photograph that captures the essence of the South Luangwa bushcamps in Zambia. I can almost hear the lions and hyenas calling in the night while tucked up in bed. Beautifully captured by Patrick Bentley.

It doesn't get much better than the night sky at Kuyenda!

All that was missing from andBeyond Travel Guide Rikus Lombard's Safari vehicle this morning was an oar as they embarked on a very wet but successful safari at Kirkman's Kamp.

A good start to the year, we were lucky to have so many leopard sightings on a recent trip into the Sabi Sands Reserve. Also good to see the bush green again.

We pledge our support for this amazing organisation and their Born to Live Wild campaign. Say NO to captive breeding and the spin-off profiteers who hide under their faux conservation fur coats!

Just watched the latest documentary exposing the horrors of captive lion breeding, canned hunting, bogus volunteer scams, lies and just a total disregard for the wellness and rights of these iconic predators. People are farming these beautiful creatures for shear profit, their bones, their skins, their price as a trophy on someones wall on the other side of the world.
Its a disgrace and I hope this film will assist the SA government to rethink its policies on "sustainable" usage of wildlife.
In the meantime African Avenue will continue to spread the word to our friends and visitors, saying NO to lion petting and lion walking operators. As soon as their is captive breeding, and interaction with humans, the concept of "conservation" ceases to exist.

Just as it seemed Africa's tourism industry was recovering from the recent Ebola scare we are now hit with xenophobic violence.

We have been shocked to see how primitive and violent some people have been towards foreign immigrants from neighbouring african countries. It is very sad to see these images coming out of our country and we hope the government can get it under control soon.

For those if you thinking of visiting southern Africa we feel, as was the case with Ebola, that you are safe to do so. These violent outbreaks have been confined to certain areas in the country that are not usually visited by tourists (except Soweto and the townships which can be easily avoided at this time). They are also not being directed towards tourists but rather foreign nationals living and working in certain areas.

Where we are on the edge of Kruger Park, and at all major game reserves, there is no risk of xenophobic violence at this stage.
In Cape Town's tourism hotspots there is also no reports of violence, nor is any expected to occur in these areas.

As is always the case with these types of incidents the international media is not able to portray the greater picture of what is happening in Southern Africa. At the moment we are only concerned for our fellow africans from countries like Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, and hope that things will settle down soon to allow them to live here in peace.
