Layer from the foundation upwards
When you start decorating a bedroom for a teen, you already have a room to work with and certain finishings are already in place. The room will have existing flooring and, unless you plan on replacing this, it is something you will have to work around or into the design.

Select a colour palette
There is no better colour palette for any room in the home than neutrals. From white to palest earth hues to warm or cool grey, painting the canvas or backdrop in neutral hues will make filling the room with everything it needs easier without worrying about colours clashing.

Many homes could use additional sources of natural light to transform dark rooms into bright, light-filled spaces. Painting walls a different colour and strategically positioning a few mirrors can sometimes help, but structural changes are often needed to make a difference. Here are a few changes you can make:

• A double-height space in a double-storey home is an easy way to bring in light from above.
• Structural glazing can replace walls or roofs.
• An open-tread staircase creates a greater sense of space and lets light trickle down to the ground floor.
• Skylights above a staircase, over a kitchen island or in a bathroom will bring in more light than a window.
• Glazed gables introduce plenty of light and create a strong focal point.
• A glazed atrium will enhance any entrance hall and create a striking circulation space.

A sun pipe or tunnel is useful for carrying natural light into spaces where skylights and windows aren’t possible - for example, a bathroom, bedroom or study in the centre of a floorplan. Natural light enters a tube through a clear dome set in a pitched or flat roof and is channelled to where it is needed using a mirrored tube. This ends in a translucent dome resembling a conventional light fitting.

These structural changes should be installed by professionals to ensure your new installation is trouble-free and adds value to your home.
