The name Kupke Smith was inspired by the life story of Wilhelm August Kupke, who later changed his name to William Smith:
As a child, Wilhelm August Kupke came from Germany to South Africa as a deck hand on a cargo ship, but was jailed by the SA government during World War I simply for being German. In prison he changed his name to William Smith, then joined the SA defense force and fought against Germany in North Africa. Wounded and captured, he was sent to Berlin as a prisoner of war. He managed to escape and made his way back to South Africa on foot via East Africa, where he later married, fathered four children and worked in a steel factory until his death. An ordinary man who survived and adapted to the political changes of his time by never, ever giving up! Gerrie Schoeman, grandson of Wilhelm Kupke/William Smith, found the Kupke Smith Investment Trust on the same basic principles:
Adapt to the demands of your time and situation
Never, ever, ever, give up
Keep things straight and simple
