In a world filled with conflict and uncertainty, I often think back to a moment about 15 years ago when I had the privilege of listening to the KwaZulu Natal Youth Symphonic Orchestra. The director of the orchestra shared a profound wish that has stuck with me ever since: to trade every AK47 assault rifle for a musical instrument.

Imagine a world where the sounds of war are replaced by the harmonies of music, where young people channel their energy into creativity and collaboration instead of violence. It would be truly incredible. Letโ€™s keep dreaming and working towards a future where peace and art triumph over conflict. ๐ŸŽถโœจ

๐ŸŒ World Elephant Day: Protect & Preserve ๐Ÿ˜

On World Elephant Day, weโ€™re reminded of the urgent need to protect these majestic creatures. Elephants face relentless threats from ivory poaching, habitat destruction, and climate change. At Oryx Trax, weโ€™re committed to safeguarding their future and the wilderness they inhabit.

These gentle giants are more than just symbols of strength and wisdomโ€”they are vital to the ecosystems they help sustain. Letโ€™s stand together to end the ivory trade and protect the natural habitats that elephants call home.

Day 9 of the Kaokoland Safari

Today, we are entering Damaraland. ๐ŸŒ Due to the flood damage and a missed opportunity to see desert-adapted elephants earlier, we made a stop at the village of De Riet and entered the Huab riverbed in search of a known elephant family. ๐Ÿ˜

After some tracking, we were thrilled to find them! It was incredible to see Rosa and her sixth offspring, Mimi. Watching these gentle giants in their natural habitat was truly awe-inspiring. ๐ŸŒฟ

Afterward, we continued our journey through Desolation Valley, passing petrified trees, Welwitschia plants ๐ŸŒต, and following the Ugab riverbed to reach our final destination, Ugab Rhino Camp. ๐Ÿฆ

This safari has been a journey of unforgettable moments. Stay tuned for more adventures! ๐Ÿš™โœจ

Day 8 of the Kaokoland Safari

From Puros, we normally follow the Hoarusib riverbed, pass the Ganias Plains, and then follow the Hoanib riverbed to Sesfontein for a crucial fuel stop. โ›ฝ However, due to heavy rains this season in the Opuwo catchment, we were advised to take a different route due to previous flood damage. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

So, from Puros, we traveled via the Giribes Plains and overnighted at our favorite campsite at Khowarib. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ The unexpected detour added a new twist to our adventure, and the landscape continues to amaze us! ๐ŸŒ„

Stay with us as our Kaokoland journey unfolds! ๐Ÿš™โœจ

Day 6 and 7 of the Kaokoland Safari

After a wonderful camp at Marienfluss, we have to leave and continue our journey to Puros. The distance is too long for one day travel, so we set up for wild camping halfway. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ Along the way, we encountered more Lonely Stonemen, adding to the mystique of our adventure. ๐Ÿ—ฟโœจ

We passed all the drums and turned south at Green Drum toward Orupembe, then down the Khumib riverbed. With the tracks washed away, we had to find our own way, making for an exciting and challenging drive. ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ’จ It was great to see Bakkies again at the community campsite. ๐Ÿค—

Stay tuned as our journey through the Kaokoland continues! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐ŸŒ

Day 5 of the Kaokoland Safari

We had a great camp last night and continued our journey to the Marienfluss today. Our first challenge was ascending Heartbreak Hill, which turned out to be not as daunting as the downhill approach.

The landscape changed constantly as we traveled through mopane vegetation, past huge baobab trees, and strange bottle trees. We navigated through mountains and valleys, crossed the Otjiha Plains, and journeyed over Joubert's Pass and Rooidrom. Finally, we reached our camp on the banks of the Kunene River, with Angola visible on the opposite side. ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒŠ

Along the way, we encountered our first of several stone men on the road, this one lounging in the sun and minding his own business. The track conditions varied from flat stretches to hilly climbs and descents, and from rocky terrain to sandy patches.

Sadly, we passed many abandoned Himba kraals, a stark reminder of the extended drought. The Marienfluss was as spectacular as always, with more grass than last year, but still struggling to recover fully from the drought.

Stay tuned for more updates as our journey through the Kaokoland continues! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿš™

Day 3 and 4 of the Kaokoland Safari

Day 3: Our third day was a rest day, allowing us to ensure our vehicle is in top condition, reorganize our gear, and explore the local village and the stunning Epupa Falls. We stayed at Epupa Camp, right on the banks of the Kunene River, enjoying the serene atmosphere and the natural beauty around us. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Day 4: We started early, knowing the route to Marienfluss would be slow and long. Turning west at Okongwati, we traveled towards Otjitanda, where we planned to wild camp just before Heartbreak Hill. The challenging conditions meant we could barely cover 150 km in a day.

As we ventured deeper into the Kaokoland, the sense of remoteness grew stronger. The ever-changing vegetation, geology, and scenery were a constant reminder of the rugged beauty of this region. Upon reaching Heartbreak Hill, we found the road severely washed out. Carefully, we inched our way down to the bottom and set up camp in the dry riverbed.

This track also leads to Van Zyl's Pass, but we'll be avoiding it in the future due to the high risk of vehicle damage, and travel on an alternative route.

Stay tuned for more updates as our adventure continues into the heart of the Kaokoland! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿš™

Day 2 of the Kaokoland Safari.

Today's route took us through Opuwo town, a vibrant place with a multitude of cultures, then onward to Swartbooisdrift. We visited the Dorslandtrek Memorial, reflecting on the tough journey of the Dorslanders. Our drive continued along the scenic Kunene River all the way to the breathtaking Epupa Waterfall. ๐ŸŒŠโœจ

Opuwo is the last town where we can stock up on fuel and any last-minute groceries. The driving conditions were mostly dirt roads with numerous drifts, which kept our speed in check. Wet conditions would have made for a different story, though!

Stay tuned for the next update as our adventure continues. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿš™

Feedback as Promised: Day 1 of the Kaokoland Safari

The Kaokoland remains one of my absolute favorite destinations! ๐ŸŒ Our adventure kicked off in Kamanjab, where we met our guests as close as possible to the safari area.

Day one took us on remote tracks, weaving through the breathtaking Khowarib Schucht, and we ended our journey at a community campsite. ๐Ÿš™โœจ This leg of the route is a true off-the-beaten-path experience, offering unparalleled beauty and tranquility.

This year, we were treated to a rare and unforgettable sightingโ€”desert-adapted elephants in the Khowarib River! ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒต Two young bulls made an appearance, and if we had been even a minute earlier or later, we would have missed this incredible moment. What an amazing way to kick off the expedition!

Stay tuned for the Day 2 update. Excited to share more of this incredible journey with you all!
