The Cape Chamber Music Collective presents two cornerstone Piano Quartets

The CCMC welcomes back one of South Africa’s finest violinists, Jeffery Armstrong, in performances of two of the cornerstones of the piano quartet repertoire - Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor K478 and Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor Op.15. Cape Town’s foremost chamber musicians, François du Toit, Petrus Coetzee and Graham du Plessis will join Jeffery in a series of performances of these works in and around Cape Town and environs.

Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor K478 is seen as a groundbreaking work. In 1785 when Mozart’s publisher commissioned him to compose three piano quartets, he expected easy works intended for Vienna’s amateur musicians. Mozart however was seized by the opportunity of writing for this “new” form and produced some of his finest ever chamber works. For Mozart the key of G minor normally reflects a sombre mood and a quality of existential angst, yet the Piano Quartet No. 1 is mostly abundant in light and energy.
Although Fauré’s Piano Quartet in C minor Op. 15 is also in a minor key, the tone is predominantly warm and optimistic. There are hints of sadness in the glorious slow movement which mirror the composer’s emotional turmoil during the composition of the work between 1876 and 1879. His engagement with famous mezzo-soprano and composer Pauline Viardot’s daughter, Marianne, was broken off, leaving the thirty-two-year-old composer temporarily heartbroken.
Jeffery Armstrong, who is back in Cape Town to perform with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, has a varied career in Europe performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. He is currently studying for a soloist’s diploma at the Hochschule for Music, Theatre and Media in Hannover. Recent highlights are being appointed as an academist with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and recording three unpublished duos by York Bowen for violin and viola with Yue Yu under the Naxos label. Jeffrey is also a director of the Cape Chamber Music Collective.
The other three musicians are part of the mettle of Cape Town classical music:
François du Toit is acknowledged as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists and musicians and is an Associate Professor of Piano and Head of Practical Studies at SA College of Music at UCT; he is also a director of the Cape Chamber Music Collective. François is an audience favourite of Capetonians and recently performed Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

After eight years of studying and playing abroad, Petrus Coetzee returned to South Africa to take up the position of Principal Violist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides the CPO, he is also a member of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra and is a part-time lecturer for viola at the Stellenbosch University Conservatory.

Graham du Plessis is a director and founding member of the Cape Chamber Music Collective and teaches at the SA College of Music at UCT. After his studies in the UK, Graham enjoyed performing throughout Europe, giving recitals in the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, and in Ischia as a guest of Lady Walton (the late wife of the composer William Walton). He recently performed the Lalo Cello Concerto as a soloist with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.

Furthermore the CCMC supports local musicians, devising programmes that give young musicians the opportunity to perform alongside established professionals and also providing all performers with competitive fees.
The programming is aimed at mixing standard repertoire with lesser-known works and also promotes and commissions works by South African composers.
Students from both schools and universities will be invited to attend coaching sessions and workshops by the musicians performing in any given programme.
Numerous performances of each programme will be presented at a variety of venues with the explicit aim of attracting the widest audience possible.

Pluk vrugte van harde werk onder Oesmaan | Celebrate fruit of hard labour under Harvest Moon (English below)

Laaste Volmaanpiekniek by Taalmonument sal weereens betower

Genoeg veilige parkering is gratis beskikbaar.

Celebrate fruit of hard labour under Harvest Moon
Enchanting last Full Moon Picnic at Taalmonument

With the summer drawing to a close, Capetonians and visitors can take a closer look at the full moon during a glorious evening on the beautiful Paarl Mountain. One and all are invited to join the Afrikaanse Taalmonument’s (ATM's) friendly staff for the last time to celebrate this natural phenomenon on Saturday, 4 March 2023.

In support of the Centre for Astronomical Heritage’s project to promote indigenous names for full moons in Southern Africa, this picnic is dedicated to the Harvest Moon as the harvesting of various summer grains is in full swing in March. During this time, summer grains were also harvested by indigenous people in a fairly large portion of pre-colonial South Africa, long before any of the other, newer crops were introduced.

The picnics are very popular with local residents and tourists alike, who especially enjoy the sunsets and incredible night scenes. Guests can come anytime between 17:00 and 22:00, and have a look at the monument that is an exceptional, symbol-rich sculpture. A free guided tour to explain all of this, takes place at 18:30. Visitors are also encouraged to explore the gardens and temporary exhibitions; there are outdoor games and playgrounds for children. Ample safe parking is available for free.

Guests are welcome to bring their own picnics and drinks (no glass) or to order picnic baskets in advance at Diesuikerkan bistro via 082 216 2510/082 856 1871 or [email protected] - this coffee shop will also sell refreshments during the event. Dress warmly and bring a torch.

The picnic series is in aid of 'Let’s Read!', the Taalmonument's literacy project for children, and therefore picnic-goers are invited to donate new or second-hand children's books.

Tickets are R40 per adult, R10 for SA students, pensioners and children, and free for children under 6 years as well as holders of annual permits. They are available from Computicket or at the gate, and no booking is required. More on the Centre for Astronomical Heritage at https://cfah.org.za.

• For more information on all the other exciting events, concerts and courses at the Taalmonument, call 021 872 3441/863 0543, visit taalmonument.co.za or follow them on Facebook. The website also offers virtual tours of the monument and museum, information in six languages on the symbolism of the Taalmonument as well as many interesting articles on Afrikaans, multilingualism and the institution's past, present and future. There are also many resources for school and research projects. Annual permits are available at only R120 for individuals or R220 per family, which includes access to all Full Moon Picnics. The coffee shop offers delicious food and beautiful views daily, contact them via diesuikerkan.co.za or of 082 216 2510.
