Voici une petite famille de gnou avec 2 jeunes de moins de 8 mois. Avant 8 mois, les cornes des jeunes sont petites et droites et leur donnent l'apparence d'un petit diable. A partir de 8 mois, les cornes vont s'incurver pour ressembler à celles des adultes.

L'hippopotame mâle est très territorial. Il défend fermement son territoire contre toute intrusion. Si un autre mâle tente de s'incruster, le propriétaire des lieux n'aura d'autre choix que d'utiliser la force pour l'en déloger.

Passer à côté d'un éléphant sur le bord de la piste est toujours un moment spécial et un peu stressant.

L'éléphant qui attend patiemment son tour pour pouvoir boire au point d'eau, est ce que l'on appelle un "Big Tusker", littéralement "grandes défenses".
Un Big Tusker est un éléphant mâle dont les défenses pèsent chacune 45kg au minimum.
Le Park Kruger fait partie de ces quelques rares endroits au monde qui abritent encore des "Big Tuskers".
Quand il y a du vent dans la savane, les animaux sont assez nerveux. Le vent les empêche de sentir les odeurs, d'entendre les bruits qui pourraient trahir la présence de potentiels prédateurs. On le voit ici, ces impalas et ce gnou sont sur la défensive.

A l'heure de midi, quand le soleil est au zénith, les éléphants aiment se rendre à la rivière pour s'y désaltérer et prendre un bon bain rafraichissant.

Savez-vous qu'il est possible de suivre cette rivière à pied, sans rencontrer âme qui vive, nos seuls voisins étant les animaux. Vidéo prise quelque part en Afrique du Sud.
Si il est fréquent d'approcher un éléphant mâle, nous avons rarement l'occasion de pouvoir approcher une troupe d'éléphants femelles avec leurs petits. En général, les mères sont assez peureuses et peuvent devenir rapidement agressives. Mais ici nous les observons depuis un moment et nous avons tenté une approche à pied.
