The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced industry performance statistics for 2017.

Worldwide annual air passenger numbers exceeded four billion for the first time, supported by a broad-based improvement in global economic conditions and lower average airfares. At the same time, airlines connected a record number of cities worldwide, providing regular services to over 20,000 city pairs in 2017, more than double the level of 1995. Such increases in direct services improve the industry’s efficiency by cutting costs and saving time for both travelers and shippers alike.

This information is included in the recently released 62nd Edition of the World Air Transport Statistics (WATS), the yearbook of the airline industry’s performance.

“In 2000, the average citizen flew just once every 43 months. In 2017, the figure was once every 22 months. Flying has never been more accessible. And this is liberating people to explore more of our planet for work, leisure and education. Aviation is the business of freedom,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

Highlights of the 2017 airline industry performance:

System-wide, airlines carried 4.1 billion passengers on scheduled services, an increase of 7.3% over 2016, representing an additional 280 million trips by air.

Airlines in the Asia-Pacific region once again carried the largest number of passengers. The regional rankings (based on total passengers carried on scheduled services by airlines registered in that region) are:

3. North America 23% market share (941.8 million, up 3.2% over 2016)
4. Latin America 7% market share (286.1 million, up 4.1% over 2016)

Bus strike to cause travel chaos
Buses on most of Melbourne's busiest routes are expected not to run tomorrow, August 16, leaving entire suburbs without any public transport in what is likely to be the largest bus strike in Victoria's history, The Age claims.

About 120 routes will be bus-free for 24 hours, as more than 1,000 drivers at Transdev and CDC Victoria walk off the job amid a pay dispute.

Transdev’s 46 services, which include many of Melbourne’s busiest Smart Bus routes, make up 30% of the metropolitan bus network.

The government appears to have no plan to run any replacement services, leaving tens of thousands of people without any public transport.

Staff will be on site at key bus stops to help passengers and PTV was looking into whether extra services could be added to the tram and train network.

Here's some fun facts and trends:

1. Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is defined by UNESCO as "tourism that respects local people, the traveller, cultural heritage and the environment." One of the most common forms of sustainable tourism is ecotourism, which seeks to promote a positive nature experience while minimising impact on the environment and increasing environmental and cultural awareness

Adventure Holiday
2. Adventure Holidays
More and more travellers are becoming thrill-seekers, combining nature, culture and adventure activities on their holidays. Travellers attach more value to experiences than material matters, driving a bucket list with more heart-pounding activities like diving with sharks, trekking through the jungle or bungee jumping off the highest bridge

3. Solo Travel
A prominent trend is the idea of solo travel. Going on an adventure alone offers incredible opportunities to embrace experiences more personally, leaving your comfort zone to make friends along the way, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

4. Heritage Holidays
A growing travel trend is to explore countries and their cultural heritage - travelling to experience places, artefacts and activities that represent stories and people of the past. Heritage tours include cultural, natural and historic resources

5. Multigenerational Travel
For those who don't yearn for travelling alone, many travellers plan all-encompassing trips to destinations that have something for everyone, from kids to teenagers to parents and grandparents. Travel is no longer just about the destination, but also the people with whom memories are made.

6. Glamping
Many travel to explore the wonders of Mother Nature, but few are happy sleeping on the floor. Glamping combines the outdoors with modern conveniences, ensuring travellers can enjoy unique parts of the world without sacrificing creature comforts. Venturing into the wilderness and sleeping in luxury tents is becoming hugely popular.

7. Voluntourism
An increasing trend in travel is to give back to the world - collecting good karma along the journey. The idea of volunteer tourism seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the places travellers visit. Travellers engage in meaningful activities all the while exploring their holiday destinations

8. Wellness Holidays

With the emergence of more resorts offering guests everything from spa treatments to yoga, more travellers pursue destinations and activities that promote health and wellness. Silence and relaxation reduce stress and boost happiness, driving the rise in travelling for wellness.
9. Travelling with Locals

Many travellers place importance on finding accommodation, particularly guesthouses, with a host that has a great deal of local knowledge. Learning from a local, travellers experience their destinations in their purest form - finding the best deals, the finest restaurants, and lesser-known attractions.

Nostalgic Destinations
10. Nostalgic Destinations
In addition to wanting new experiences, many travellers want to experience childhood memories and return to favourite family destinations. The popularity of nostalgic destinations is driven by precious memories and wanting to see these destinations from another perspective

AIRLINK SUSPENDS PIETERMARITZBURG-CAPE TOWN SERVICES
Airlink regrets to announce the suspension of air services on their Pietermaritzburg-Cape Town route.
"This was not a decision taken lightly, but after almost 17 months, the route has not developed as we expected it would, impacted by the pressures of our economy and the relatively small catchment of the Pietermaritzburg resident market. In order to stem losses, we will suspend services from 1 October 2018," explained Karin Murray.
Since 6 February 2017 the Pietermaritzburg to Cape Town service has provided locally based government officials, private sector businesses, industries and communities located in and around Pinetown, Kloof, Hillcrest, Howick, Midlands and leisure travellers with a convenient direct service between Pietermaritzburg and the Mother City. Airlink currently operates daily return flights on the route, using 37-seat Embraer ERJ135LR regional jets to deliver an effective full-service value proposition offering on the route.
Sadly, the route has not become profitable, despite our collaborative best efforts – including significant marketing initiatives by the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce, to promote the connection.
Airlink would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the suspension of the service.
Customers holding confirmed tickets for travel after the 29 September 2018 will be offered a full refund.

Breaking News:

SA Express was grounded this afternoon for ‘serious non-compliance’, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has confirmed.

The authority suspended SA Express’s Air Operator's Certificate (AoC) as well as the airline’s Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) approvals.

As a result, the airline can no longer continue to operate. “In order to be able to operate, SA Express will have to reapply and be issued with relevant approvals,” the CAA said in a statement.

Ethiopian Airlines has been granted a second daily flight to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport (MIA) following an agreement between Kenya President, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiv Ahmed Ali.

The additional daily flight is expected to boost tourism in the southern coastal region of Kenya, which, until now has been heavily reliant on charter flights from Europe. Turkish Airlines is the only carrier flying scheduled flights from Europe to Mombasa. Currently, the only regional airline that flies to MIA as well as Ethiopian is RwandAir from Kigali.

Hotels and other players in the tourism sector in Mombasa have lobbied for more direct international flights to MIA. Currently, tourists for Mombasa connect at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for flights to Mombasa.

This expansion in Kenya highlights Ethiopian Airlines’ rapid growth across the continent. It has become Africa’s largest airline by revenue and fleet size, overtaking major rivals Kenya Airways and South African Airways. The airline has set a goal of having a fleet of 120 aircraft by 2025 and already has 100 aircraft.

1. Storms and natural disasters are making travel more difficult.
This year has been a particularly tough one for travel, with natural disasters and system failures overwhelming some suppliers. But travel agents have the access and the knowledge to help speed your re-accommodation, and act as your advocate when there are problems. When you book with an agent you can reach out to an actual person with whom you have built a trust relationship. Travel agents can help change travel dates due to weather, or change the destination completely. They can hold cruise and air options for you and confirm your hotel before booking a non-refundable reservation. And in these weather-affected times, no client wants to sit on hold with the airlines or a tour operator for hours—so let a travel agent do the work for you.
2. Life is busier and more demanding than ever, and vacation time is more valuable.
There is no do-over for a vacation gone wrong. Travel agents can help you achieve the vacation you desire because they listen, suggest, adjust, understand and become a friend... not just a search engine or an anonymous voice. “They do the work, you pack and go!”
3. Travel agents add a human element.
A travel professional ensures that you are a person, not a number. They are invested in their clients' happiness and satisfaction and want to make sure each and every trip is packed full of positive lifelong memories. They are with you before, during and after your trip—kind of like "for better or for worse." Travel agents answer their phones and respond to their email no matter where you are on the planet.
4. Trips are more complicated than ever, as the number of multi-generational vacations and destination weddings continues to grow.
Multi-generational vacations are still very much in demand. Baby Boomers are paying big money to take their kids and grandkids on high-end vacations. Because planning travel with a multitude of people is a challenge, a travel agent is a perfect choice to be the “middleman” and provide assistance to plan a perfect family vacation.
5. The world is constantly changing, and travel agents are on the ground experiencing it.
Has the Caribbean recovered from the latest hurricane? Can Americans travel to Cuba these days? Has the smoke cleared in Napa? Travel advisors don't just sell a destination—they discover, research and experience the places they offer over and over, sharing the actual and current status quo with their customers. Just like in everyday life, it takes a village to understand the dynamics of every destination. Why do it alone if you don't have to?
6. They save you so much time and stress.
Sure, reading about places to go is fun and enticing—but planning a trip is stressful. There is so much data available online, in magazines and books, and even on TV. Travel agents travel for work, looking at everything from the size of the rooms at hotels and cruise ships to the dining options that are available, onsite and nearby. And if they haven't personally been where you want to go, a colleague has or their preferred tour operators have. They know the hidden gems in a given destination because they've either seen it, or because they listened to the previous client who came home and raved about something they found by chance. They also tend to specialize in destinations or niches like LGBT or Special Needs travel. Every time they travel they are focusing on these details—so customers can just dream about their destination and not have to worry.
7. They often save you money—and if not, they deliver more value.
Even if your travel agent charges a fee, the value you receive will be bigger than what you paid. Ariel Chavez, with New Frontier Travel, for instance, noted that one of his new clients had been booking group cruises directly for many years—and never knew he could receive group amenities and discounts. He thought using a travel agent would cost extra when in fact using an agent can save you money and get you extras and insider access.
8. They can reassure anxious travelers because they know where you should go and where you shouldn’t.
Betsy Bouche of Largay Travel Inc. counted 20 separate travel advisories in September 2016; the first two weeks of October brought 10 more. The two months saw 10 hurricanes, 3 earthquakes, 5 strikes against travel suppliers, 2 shootings/bombings, 1 airline bankruptcy, 2 major wildfires, 1 airline fuel shortage, 1 volcano about to erupt, Ryanair flight cancellations, 1 visa suspension (Turkey), 1 State Department warning (Cuba), and 1 named snowstorm. Anyone care to navigate that on their own? People are nervous, anxious and unsure. Agents feel a huge responsibility to explain, re-assure and assist their clients in making the best possible choices. And now, with all the devastation and destruction from Mother Nature, they can be instrumental in helping to decipher what destinations are accessible.
9. They offer unique services for discerning clients.
Marketing to the masses is pointless for travel agents, says Mary Misinco, a travel advisor at Travel Experts, Inc. in Macon, Ga. “Our services are not for everyone, they are for those that appreciate that they do this for not just a living, but because it is how they make life and travel better. They are the whisper, not the shout out. Exclusive.”
10. Like any professional advisor, they know more than you do.
Should you book that Rhine River cruise heading north or heading south? Travel agents know which hotel rooms have the best view room; they know you should renew your passport six months before it expires; they know you should bring your own road maps in Europe because rental car companies don't provide them. They can recommend a private guide instead of a ship excursion, an interesting destination along the way, a chance to get off the beaten track and see something uniquely important to you.
