The ORIGINAL Mampoer Festival - 29 June 2024
Celebrate South African culture at the ORIGINAL Mampoer Festival.

The DITSONG: Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum is proud to announce the return of the ORIGINAL Mampoer Festival – a celebration of traditional mampoer, craft beer, liqueur, and several gin and wine tastings.

Activities include boeresport, boer-dra-‘n-vrou race, vintage cars, an eclectic range of stalls and live music on Saturday, 29 June 2024.

This traditional festival will take place at the DITSONG: Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum grounds and promises to be a vibrant showcase of South African culture.

Mampoer, a traditional fruit-based liquor, holds a special place in South African heritage, and the festival offers attendees the opportunity to taste a variety of flavours and learn about the history and craft of mampoer making. Visitors can also enjoy live music, traditional performances and explore the Museum’s exhibits.

“We are excited to host the Mampoer Festival once again and share this important part of South African culture with our community”, said Julia Roelofse, Site Curator at the DITSONG: Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum.

“The festival is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together, celebrate and learn about the rich traditions surrounding mampoer”. We haven’t forgotten the children who can ride on ponies, camels, try their hand at target shooting and enjoy tractor and train rides too.

The festival will run from 08h00 to 17h00 on Saturday 29 June 2024 at the DITSONG: Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the taste of tradition at the Mampoer Festival.

Stalls and exhibitors can contact us on 082 895 7141 or 0810010675

Friends of Rayton Meander – Bread Gypsey at Roodeplaat Area - In our bakery, we exclusively utilize the finest quality ingredients. This includes stone-ground flour, free-range eggs, the freshest milk, and farm-fresh butter of the highest calibre.

Before the low-GI, carb-clever, banting-friendly, wheat-free, gluten-free, and essentially joy-free varieties of bread began to populate our supermarket shelves, bread was a staple food. It had been one since the Stone Age. A few artis
ans still believe that by returning to the old ways, we can rekindle the old flame… Among those few Artisans is a bakery that holds the secret to creating the most delectable sourdough bread and pastries.
This bakery, known as The Bread Gypsy, is more than just a supply of baked goods; it is a gateway to a world of knowledge and culinary delight.
WHERE TRADITION MEETS THE MODERN LIFESTYLE
At the Bread Gypsy, we believe in the power of tradition, simplicity, community, and generosity. These values form the foundation of our business.
Each of our Artisan breads are crafted with care and expertise. We start with stone-ground flour, carefully selected for its quality and nutritional value. Each loaf is meticulously shaped by hand and baked in a wood-fired oven, infusing it with a unique flavor and texture that could never be replicated.
Our commitment to preserving tradition while embracing the modern lifestyle sets us apart from other bakeries.
We understand that in today’s fast-paced world, convenience is key. That’s why we made it our mission to provide you with the traditional experience of freshly baked bread and pastries right at your fingertips.
THE POWER OF BREAKING BREAD TOGETHER
When you walk into The Bread Gypsy, you will be greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked goods.
Our knowledgeable staff will guide you through our wide selection of freshly baked products, sharing their expertise and passion for the craft. They will help you choose the perfect loaf or pastry that suits your taste buds and dietary preferences. But it’s not just about the products; it’s about the experience. The Bread Gypsy became a community of its own—a place where team members become family, over a cup of coffee and a warm croissant. A place where stories are shared and lasting friendships are formed.
We believe in the power of breaking bread together and creating lasting memories.

Friends of Rayton Meander – Somabula Nature Reserve - Nestled peacefully in a valley surrounded by pristine bush, Somabula Nature Reserve offers the perfect environment in which to unwind.
Ideally situated for weekend getaways, only one hour from Johannesburg and 40 minutes from Pretoria, the reserve boasts a wide variety of antelope as well as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest and an abundance of birdlife.
Day visitors can make use of the lapa with its braai area for family gatherings or special occasions. There are more than 30kms of roads and trails for walking and hiking.
Nearby, visit the quaint diamond village of Cullinan for a tour in the world famous Premier Diamond Mine and stroll down historic Oak Avenue with its various museums, shops and restaurants
To date, fifty species of mammals have been recorded on the reserve ranging in size from Giraffe to the pygmy mouse weighing in at just six grams!
A number of antelope species can be seen during drives and walks on the reserve. Although many of the smaller nocturnal mammals are shy and difficult to observe, tracks and signs give away their presence and can be seen virtually anywhere if one looks closely. Somabula Nature Reserve is well known for its howling jackals which may be heard at just about any time of the day but most often in the early evening. Visitors are advised to pack away all food items before leaving your accommodation, as Vervet monkeys may become problematic.
Frogs are common at Somabula Nature Reserve. They are most easily seen after dark on warm summer nights when males gather at wetland areas to call. Choruses can be almost deafening at close range and may be heard from any part of the reserve during the summer breeding season. Listen out for frogs on summer nights. You will probably be able to hear sand frogs, kassinas, cacos and toads calling. Thirty-five reptile species can be seen.
