Call us for your personalized tour! Give us a call to personalise your experience in South Africa, specifically the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. We do things differently. Instead of chasing from one venue to the next, we stop, smell, see and feel the heartbeat of the Karoo, a great expanse of semi-desert that hides the most beautiful sights! We explain all the nuances that connect your s

oul to Mother Nature. Short walks or resting under a Shepard's tree, slow you down to soak up the magnificence of fresh air and breathtaking views.

We had some visitors during December, that were very interested in the different aloe species in the Karoo. This is one we don't see a lot of. We should have put a banana for scale,, as it is tiny, probably only about 3 inches high. No idea what it is, so if someone can enlighten us, we'd appreciate it! We may have to go back in winter, when they flower to confirm what it is.

It seems to be a week for birds. Stunning Martial Eagle, watching the traffic go by. Did you know that the wingspan of the Martial eagle can reach up to 2.4 meters? That's over 7 feet!! Such a privilege to see these birds in their natural habitat.

How lucky are we to have seen this Rock Kestrel attacking what it thought was a predator? The poor owl at the Angler and Antelope Guesthouse is just a garden ornament, but with its swiveling head, it must look quite real!

The Karoo is a semi-arid geographical area, and some parts of this huge part of South Africa, have not had significant rain for 12 years! That's longer than any drought should last, really. Some fountains have dried up, and some towns are only given water for 3 hours a day. You'll be surprised how quickly the veldt responds, even to just a few millimetres of rain.

In the rural areas of South Africa, it is not uncommon to encounter wildlife in the road. You need to be mindful of this, and when you encounter a small animal like this rhebok try to drive very slowly, or even stop, and allow the animal to find a hole in the fence to get to safety.

May you have many adventures in 2025!

It is said that the Karoo is best appreciated on your knees. You need to stop and look, it seems dry and desolate, but in that semi desert landscape, you can always find some beauty.

If the writing on the wall, the rescued bat eared fox, and the Pegasus Filling Station weren't clues enough, the flags painted on the rocks as you come into Steytlerville are a dead giveaway. Yup, our road trip took us into the Noorsveld, to a currently very dry Steytlerville. There's always something to see in the small towns of South Africa!

Driving around the Karoo when the wind is quite strong, you don't expect to see much activity. Yesterday was a little different, we saw no less than 7 Kori Bustards walking around. This is the largest bustard, and is near-threatened, so always a special sighting!

When you experience Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo, it's not just about the fishing. It's about the journey, and who you take along with you, as much as the thrill of a Karoo trout on the end of your line. Technical nymphing doesn't get better than this!

The Jacaranda trees are native to South America, but you will find many of them in South Africa. Johannesburg is absolutely covered in them in October, but in the Eastern Cape, they bloom a bit later, from November. It is a messy but beautiful sight!

For the first time in 20 years, we've noticed these trees in the mountain, covered in little yellow flowers. We've come to the conclusion that it is the Sneezewood trees flowering, but they obviously don't do it so prolifically very often. Would be interesting to find out from someone in the know, whether it is as unusual as we think it is!

Isn't it just so wonderful how the adult elephants shelter and protect the young? Wonderful seeing them in groups like this, but it does happen that you go to Addo Elephant National Park, and don't see an elephant! Make sure you go with a guide, it gives you a much better chance at a really special sighting.

The majority of foreign visitors, like to come to South Africa in the summer months. November and February are particularly popular. Something to bear in mind when planning your trip:

1. You can get snow in November in South Africa
2. February is very, very hot!

Why not think of coming in Autumn or Spring? The weather is much more moderate, and chances of the thunderstorms we get in Summer or cold fronts we get in Winter (with rain in the Western Cape) are very low.
