Did you know that the selfie frame at the Valley of Desolation is regarded by some travel agents as the number one selfie spot in the country? Table mountain gets number 3... You see, the Eastern Cape Karoo is definitely starting to get the recognition it deserves. Now to get visitors to explore around these incredible icons too. That is our job. To show you the beauty around the normal tourist attractions too.

When visiting the Valley of Desolation, just outside the 4th oldest town in South Africa, Graaff-Reinet, you really should stop at the Toposcope, to look out over the valley and the town. It's quite a sight, and after that you can go to the pièce de résistance, with its dolerite columns and sheer cliff faces. Mind blown!

This is an indigenous yellow fish, and quite a sought after quarry for fly fishermen in South Africa. Once you catch one, you'll realise that they are very different from Carp. Definitely one of the species you must try to catch when you visit! Chat to us and we'll personalize a trip for you with Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo.

Yes, this is still the Karoo, the semi-arid geographical area that we live in. Can you believe how beautiful it looks? Everything green, and the grass so long, and the bush so thick, that you struggle to see an animal as big as an eland! Long may it last.

It seems desert tourism has become quite a thing of late. Has the rest of the world caught on to the restorative power of wide open spaces? You can feel the heartbeat of Mother Nature when you walk here, gazing into the distance, just you and no-one else!

Have you ever tried to photograph a determined tortoise? When they're on their way somewhere, they just keep moving, and it's impossible to get a good picture. But when they get to where they were so purposefully going, it's a different story!

People do get a little confused with the names, but just as a guide, a tortoise lives on land, a terrapin in fresh water, and a turtle in the ocean.

No, we don't offer kayaking tours, though we could probably arrange a day trip doing something like that. We do, however, take the kayak with on some fishing trips, so that we can put the fishermen in the best spots.

This guy had us absolutely stumped. We couldn't figure out what type of raptor it was, until we consulted one of the resident experts here in Somerset East. Imagine our surprise when he said that it is an immature Pale Chanting Goshawk! But they're grey, not brown?! Look at the eyes though, and you can see it clearly.

Last week was spent getting ready and organized for our Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo experience on the Orange River. It was an absolute blast, with many, many yellowfish caught.

Staying in a little town like Philippolus, gives you a truly authentic South African experience, and the fishing? Well, that's just a fantastic experience!

We love it when our guests decide to have a little fun with the decorations at the places we take them to! What are you looking at?

Sometimes its impossible to get a photograph, but in this case, the video, with π˜€π—Όπ˜‚π—»π—± 𝗼𝗻 please, is probably a better identifier for these LBJ's than a photo would have been. We're thinking Lazy Cisticola, what do you think? Don't you just love the Afrikaans name for these, Tinktinkie?

The Waterbuck is a large robust antelope. It inhabits areas that are close to water in grasslands, forests, and riverine woodlands south of the Sahara. They are very definitely not common in our area, so would have been introduced by one of the farmers in the area.

Such a beautiful animal, and unmistakable, with the white circle painted on it's behind!

We had some visitors during December, that were very interested in the different aloe species in the Karoo. This is one we don't see a lot of. We should have put a banana for scale,, as it is tiny, probably only about 3 inches high. No idea what it is, so if someone can enlighten us, we'd appreciate it! We may have to go back in winter, when they flower to confirm what it is.

It seems to be a week for birds. Stunning Martial Eagle, watching the traffic go by. Did you know that the wingspan of the Martial eagle can reach up to 2.4 meters? That's over 7 feet!! Such a privilege to see these birds in their natural habitat.

How lucky are we to have seen this Rock Kestrel attacking what it thought was a predator? The poor owl at the Angler and Antelope Guesthouse is just a garden ornament, but with its swiveling head, it must look quite real!

The Karoo is a semi-arid geographical area, and some parts of this huge part of South Africa, have not had significant rain for 12 years! That's longer than any drought should last, really. Some fountains have dried up, and some towns are only given water for 3 hours a day. You'll be surprised how quickly the veldt responds, even to just a few millimetres of rain.
