Celebrating our INCREDIBLE SLOW Guides!

Despite the record-breaking rainfall and even snow on Table Mountain over the past two months, our guides have all truly gone above and beyond to ensure unforgettable experiences for all guests.

July/August brought the highest monthly rainfall recorded since the South African Weather Service began comprehensive records in 1960, with over 500mm of rain at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens weather station. Despite this, we only cancelled one scheduled trip due to safety concerns.

Our guides braved the elements, and maintained a positive attitude throughout, so a huge thank you to our amazing team for their resilience and commitment to providing safe and wonderful experiences regardless of the weather conditions!

Here’s to more adventures ahead!

"The guide we had for our hike: 10/10. We highly recommend [Jodie] and [SLOW Walks & Hikes]. Everything was amazing and now I am so spoiled that I don't want to take any type of trip unless its full service - 5 star like this one!" - Daniella Rivera

During an upcoming IUCN meeting in October, a proposal is set to be discussed regarding the potential elevation of the conservation status of the African penguin from "endangered" to "critically endangered." This recommendation stems from BirdLife South Africa, who have highlighted the significant population decline of this distinctive penguin species.

At present, the African penguin population stands at approximately 97% lower than historical levels, raising concerns about the potential extinction of these iconic birds in the wild by 2035. SLOW Walks & Hikes offers opportunities to observe and learn more about the African Penguin through our Full Day Cape of Great Walks and Half Day Beaches & Boulders experiences. As dedicated conservationists, we aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by these endangered species and garner the necessary attention and support for their preservation.

"I would like to say a very big thank you for the amazing Table Mountain tour I had with Henning as our guide on Sunday (30th June 2024) we had a great experience, and I was highly impressed about Henning's knowledge, patience and overall mountain guiding skills & professionalism. This was a long climb up India Venster to the top and there were times I was a little out of my comfort zone. 😊 Henning was incredibly patient and knew how to calm my nerves when I got a little jittery! From beginning to end we were well taken care of and will highly recommend these great tours to our clientele." - Teresa Lawler, Livingstone Safaris.

Our Trade Fam trips are extra special as we get to share the SLOW experience with those who already have a love for our gorgeous country and are on the same mission as us: to spread their love for South Africa.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Annual Maintenance Shutdown will take place from July 15th to September 1st, 2024 – spanning a total of 7 weeks!

During this time, our standard Half Day Rise & Climb itinerary will transform into a full-day adventure. Guests will hike up and down the mountain which averages between 5-7 hours, depending on fitness levels. With the extended duration of the hike we recommend including a Trailside Lunch in lieu of the cableway ticket usually included.

Alternatively, for those looking for a less strenuous option, we recommend our Half Day Lion's Head Chains and Ladders hike which offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Table Mountain, the sea, and the city.

Our Gardens to Grapes (Kirstenbosch Gardens & Constantia Winelands) Hike is rivalling our Table Mountain Hikes in popularity - is it because it includes wine?

It's way more than that!

It also includes a gentle contour path walk boasting breathtaking views of mountain vistas, False Bay, and some of the Constantia Winelands - with a perfect view point to enjoy our signature Trailside Tea!

Happy World Turtle Day!

World Turtle Day, initiated in 2000 and sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue, is dedicated to celebrating and protecting turtles and tortoises. It aims to raise awareness and promote efforts to ensure their survival and well-being.

South Africa boasts a remarkable diversity of tortoise species, with fourteen varieties calling our country their home. In the Western Cape region, there are four prevalent species, each with its own unique characteristics. Among them is the majestic leopard tortoise (the largest tortoise on the continent weighing over 50 kgs as adults); the angulate tortoise; the padloper (recognised as the world's smallest tortoise), and the distinctive tent tortoise with its shell's tent-like appearance.

Our Full Day Cape of Great Walks includes a bush and beach hike in a secluded corner of Cape Point Nature Reserve, where the chance of spotting a tortoise is high!

Our Cape of Great Walks Full Day Tour includes the must-see Boulders Penguin Colony.

Located in a picturesque cove nestled between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, Boulders is renowned for its thriving African Penguin colony. This endangered species, known as “Spheniscus Demersus”, can be observed up close in their natural habitat.

Since its humble beginnings with just two breeding pairs in 1982, the penguin colony has flourished to approximately 2,200 individuals in recent years. This growth can be attributed in part to the decrease in commercial pelagic trawling in False Bay, which has boosted the availability of pilchards and anchovies, crucial components of the penguins' diet.

Surrounded by indigenous vegetation above the high-water mark and the pristine waters of False Bay, the Boulders features several sheltered bays enclosed by ancient granite boulders dating back 540 million years. It really is a breathtaking sight to behold.

For guests who are wanting a more adventurous route up Table Mountain!

The India Venster route remains one of our favourite hiking trails with its diverse terrain, remarkable rock formations, and dramatic landscapes. During the initial two hours, hikers are treated to panoramic city views, followed by breathtaking vistas of the sea as they ascend to the upper section.

It takes guests through a formidable section of Table Mountain, navigating steep and striking terrain that appears unconquerable from below which makes it a truly exhilarating hiking experience.

Happy Human Rights Day!

Did you know that part of our human rights is the “right to roam”? The freedom to roam, or "everyman's right," is the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land, mountains, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise.

Aside from the more serious note of celebrating the universal rights and freedoms that make us all unique and valued members of society, and the reminder to be a voice of solidarity for those who may not have one - today we are celebrating our right to hike!

Everyone deserves the freedom to connect with nature and explore the great outdoors, and we are here to provide your guests with the opportunity to do so on some of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks: Table Mountain, Lions Head, and in the Cape Peninsula.
