Exotic Turkiye
Cumalıkızık is a historical Ottoman village in Türkiye, founded in the early 14th century, making it around 700 years old. Nestled in the foothills of Uludağ, near Bursa, it is one of the best-preserved examples of early Ottoman architecture and rural life.
The Story of Cumalıkızık: The Timeless Village
In the rolling green hills near Bursa, where cobbled streets whisper stories of centuries past, lies Cumalıkızık, a village frozen in time. Its history stretches back to the early 1300s, when the newly rising Ottoman Empire established small villages to support the conquest of Bursa. Built with stone, wood, and adobe, its houses—many still standing—witnessed the empire’s expansion, the passage of sultans, and the quiet persistence of village life.
Among its many tales, one story stands out—the legend of Aylin, a young woman who lived in the village during the late 19th century. She was known for her intricate embroidery, each stitch capturing the beauty of Uludağ’s changing seasons. One fateful winter, a wandering artist from Istanbul arrived, seeking inspiration for a great painting commissioned by the Sultan himself. Captivated by the charm of Cumalıkızık and Aylin’s artistry, he decided to stay, immortalizing the village in his sketches. But their friendship soon sparked jealousy among villagers, leading to whispers that drove the artist away. Aylin, heartbroken, continued her craft, and it is said that her last, unfinished embroidery—a design of two entwined hearts—remains hidden in an attic, waiting to be discovered.
Cumalıkızık on the Screen
The village’s authenticity and charm have not gone unnoticed in modern times. Cumalıkızık gained widespread fame as a filming location for "Kınalı Kar", a popular Turkish TV series from the early 2000s. The show, a romantic drama set against a rural Ottoman backdrop, brought visitors flocking to see its quaint streets and colorful houses. More recently, the village has also appeared in historical TV series and films, particularly those depicting the early days of the Ottoman Empire, such as "Diriliş: Ertuğrul" and "Kuruluş: Osman".
With its 700-year-old houses, winding stone alleys, and the warmth of its villagers, Cumalıkızık continues to be a bridge between past and present. Whether as a setting for television, a hidden gem for travelers, or the keeper of lost stories like Aylin’s, it remains a living piece of Ottoman history, waiting for new tales to be woven into its legacy.
