22 January 1879, the unassuming hill at Isandlwana saw the bloodiest defeat of a British army at the hands of a native army in history. The first battle of the Anglo Zulu war took place and about 1300 British soldiers lost their lives whilst approximately 3000 Zulu warriors perished.
On the same day however the British forces also defended the hospital at Rorke's drift with only 150 men against a force of 5000 Zulus. 11 Victorian crosses were awarded, the most ever in a single battle.
To walk around on these old battlefields, you really feel the anguish these men must've felt. History should not be forgotten, especially in your own country.
The roads past the Drakensberg, through Howick, past Karkkloof and towards Greytown are so scenic. An absolute must for any traveller.
The Isandlwana Lodge is the perfect place to stay over, beautiful views and hospitable people welcoming you. It is with reason I did not say staff, as you are welcomed like family.
Can't wait to return!
Our final day takes us back to the city but not before visiting a special historic place.
