22 January 1879, the unassuming hill at Isandlwana saw the bloodiest defeat of a British army at the hands of a native army in history. The first battle of the Anglo Zulu war took place and about 1300 British soldiers lost their lives whilst approximately 3000 Zulu warriors perished.

On the same day however the British forces also defended the hospital at Rorke's drift with only 150 men against a force of 5000 Zulus. 11 Victorian crosses were awarded, the most ever in a single battle.

To walk around on these old battlefields, you really feel the anguish these men must've felt. History should not be forgotten, especially in your own country.

The roads past the Drakensberg, through Howick, past Karkkloof and towards Greytown are so scenic. An absolute must for any traveller.

The Isandlwana Lodge is the perfect place to stay over, beautiful views and hospitable people welcoming you. It is with reason I did not say staff, as you are welcomed like family.

Can't wait to return!

Our final day takes us back to the city but not before visiting a special historic place.

Sometimes on tour you have to take a day and spend some time in an area and just take it all in. Yesterday was such a day.

We took time in the Midlands Meander and travelled to Howick to see the waterfall and further North to Nottingham Road. This town was named after the Nottingham regiment from England was stationed in the area during the 19th Century to repulse attacks from the Basotho.

The Howick falls measuring 97 metres in height looked amazing with a full Umgeni river.

We also visited the Apartheid Museum at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. This is where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962 and sentenced to prison for 27 years. It is good to be reminded of history every now and again and the museum gives a lot of information about the events leading up to the arrest, the prison years and ultimately with Nelson Mandela becoming president.

As we had a day off the bikes, it was time for some beer tasting as well. Many little craft breweries in the area are worth the visit!

Today we'll visit some more historical battlefields as we continue through Kwa Zulu Natal.

Clarens had some rain overnight and we woke up to a beautiful clear day.

The ladies did some mandatory shopping in the many little shops around the town Square before we started the day's ride. And what a scenic ride it was.

To begin your ride with the beautiful road through the Golden Gate National Park is just a privilege. Mother Nature is boasting with her beauty after all the rains and the veld is looking lush green and spectacular. After Lichen pass we took one of the gravel roads through the Park and headed towards Mt Paul.

Always one of the highlights of the trip, we were looking forward to the steep 1:3 gradient road leading up to the view point. With the rains however, the first bit of road was so muddy we decided not to risk vehicles and limbs and proceed to the Sterkfontein dam lookout.

The Sterkfontein dam feeds the Vaaldam with water and is the 3rd biggest dam in South Africa after the Gariep and the Vander Kloof dams. The colour of the water was a brilliant blue and we just had to support Knowledge a local entrepreneur struggling from the effects of Covid and lockdown which kept tourists away.

The Pig and Plough provided us with lunch which kept us going the last 200km through the Lower Loteni area hugging the Drakensberg and Lesotho.

The Sani Premier Resort is a perfect overnight stop just below the Sani pass, with huge fireplaces where you can enjoy your nightcap after dinner.
