My journey to SKS:DG began with a discussion over a cup of coffee with my mom at this restaurant. After almost 6 years of leading trails in the most pristine wilderness areas of Kruger National Park, I’ve logged more than 4 500 hours on foot, while experiencing over 770 Encounters with the Big 5, and 28 Certificates later - I can finally say, I have been awarded the FGASA Special Knowledge & Skills: Dangerous Game qualification (SKS:DG). Our most recent visit to the same restaurant, shares a memorable HIGH FIVE as I show my mom this prestigious certificate which I was awarded.👌🏼🙏🥳🍾🥳❤️

SWAROVSKI OPTIK Outdoor

Being chosen as 1 of only 20 people from around the world to represent Swarovski Optik as a Nature Explorer is such an honour.

I’ve chosen the “CL COMPANIONS” as my preferred choice of Binoculars. These are lightweight and compact, perfect for everyday exploring through my backyard, in the Kruger National Park.

Warren Deyzel shared a post on Instagram: "Hyena’s run a matriarchal system, where the dominant female runs the clan. The sub-ordinate males will fill the role of looking after the den site, while the dominant female is out and about. Watch how this young, up-and-coming, little pup tries to domina...

Elephants have highly developed trunks. They use it for a multitude of tasks. They achieve this by using 1 of the 8 pairs of muscles which exist within the trunk. Between these muscles, they are broken up into around 150 000 muscle fascicles - this not only helps it to be strong, but also highly effective in achieving a wide range of different tasks, from Smelling, Lifting, Breaking, Exploring, Feeling and possibly even forms of affection.

In nature, it’s not only about the vibrant views but also about the majestic calls that could be observed… Here we can hear a Black-Backed Jackal vocalising a distance signal. This, simultaneously assists to maintain spacing from rivals or strangers of the same species and establishes or maintains contact with a mate or family members. #100-400mkII

Southern Ground Hornbills form part of the Bucorvus Genus - when translated means Large, Huge or Great Raven. They differ in various ways, unlike smaller hornbills. They have relatively longer legs with shorter stubbier toes, that are joined at the base. They have an additional vertebra in their necks (15 vertebra) which assists them with foraging on the ground. They generally forage in a group for anything they can overpower but very seldom share their food. You’ll notice this youngster displays a cream color facial patch which is a good indication that it’s only about a year old. This will change to a yellow, then to an orange and finally to a red color around the age of about 4-6 years.

Hyenas have a very significant breeding behaviour - where they actively practice siblicide..
Notice how two of these youngsters look bigger, and may appear to seem older than the other two cubs? They are in fact the same age, but differ in size and appearance due to their increased intake of nutrients, from birth. These are two sets of cubs. Notice how there’s only 2 medium sized ones, and also 2 smaller ones… unfortunately the 3rd smallest cubs (from both litters) have already died.

The females are only able to feed two cubs at a time, and as nature takes it’s course, the third cub almost always dies. This is vitally important in nature, to ensure survival of the fittest.

Did you know, Chameleons change the colour of their skin to maintain a favourable body temperature, and not for camouflage? A cold Chameleon may change to a darker colour, in order to attract heat… while a hotter chameleon will change to a lighter colour to reflect heat. The outermost layer of the chameleon's skin is transparent. Beneath this, are several more layers of skin that contain specialized cells called chromatophores. The chromatophores at each level are filled with sacs of different kinds of pigment. The deepest layer contains melanophores, which are filled with brown melanin (the same pigment that gives human skin its many shades). Above that layer are cells called iridophores, which have a blue pigment that reflects blue and white light. Layered on top of those cells are the xanthophores and erythrophores, which contain yellow and red pigments, respectively. #10

Elephants are K-Selector breeders. This means they sexually mature late in life, and give birth to few young. Typically they give birth to One live young, but won’t calf again for another 4-9 Years, depending on nutrition and population density. Notice both these youngsters are from the same cow (>1yr old and +- 6yrs old)

After a gestation period of around 100 days, Leopards give birth to 1-3 cubs, weighing in at an average of only 500g. Their eyes open after 6-10 days, and they will be weaned at around 6 weeks / 3kg. Around the same time they will leave their hiding spot and start exploring. Notice how this little youngster has mastered the art of arboreal activities.

Each animal has a “follow-me” sign, specifically hidden from the front of the animal (Camouflage), but clearly visible from the back of the animal. This is so that individuals of the same species can easily follow each other through the Bushveld. Notice the clear black tuft of hair at the end of the lioness’s tail… do you also notice how it is perfectly situated at eye level for these little cubs to follow…

Elephants eyesight is less developed than their sense of smell and hearing. They exhibit arrhythmic vision, which means their vision changes within the daytime. At night, their eyes are most sensitive to violet light, so they can see very well under the smallest amount of daylight, when the dominant color of the atmosphere is in the violet range. They have sensitive rods as well (the higher density of rods in the retina, the more sensitive to light it becomes). Which means elephants have a better adapted night vision compared to humans.

Elephants have a continual growth spurt, and not a defined one like ourselves… basically they continue to grow throughout their lifetime. Which means, in theory, the largest Elephant you’re going to see, would most likely be the oldest Elephant you’ll see.

Lions are extremely powerful hunters. They can maintain speeds of up to 60km/h, sometimes over a distance of 100m. Having said this, an experienced Lion, will rarely charge unless it’s within 30m of its prey. Watch how this Female approaches this young male, notice how they practice their “killing” techniques. They do this, in order to get “fit” for hunting.

Notice how this Bull Elephant Forages for the much desired Marula Fruit. These Marula Trees (Sclerocarya Birrea), fruit between the months of February & March. They produce a Yellow/Green fruit which is high in Vitamin C. This boosts the Elephants immune system, and gets their energy levels ready for mating. Watch out during this time of year, because it also heightens their testosterone levels, which makes them a little more unpredictable…

Most lions live in resident prides, based on hunting ranges which need to be large enough to support their food requirements, even during occasional periods of game scarcity. This home range can be between 20km (Best Habitat) up to 400km (Low Prey Density). There may be up to 40 lions in a single pride, but it is rare to see them all assembled in one location. Pride members are usually scattered singly, and in small groups that can change daily, as individuals come and go on their own initiative. Groups are usually 3 - 5 lions, and the females may only be found together up to 50% of the time. Mere presence in a prides territory is no proof of membership, as some lions are lodgers (squatters). Pride membership can only be determined by observing which individuals interact amicably over a period of time, like these females

There are three main classifications when it comes to identifying an animals active period. These three periods are Diurnal (Active during the day), Nocturnal (Active at night time) or Crepuscular (Active at sunrise and sunset). This Male Lion clearly prefers being Noctural…. 😉 #2022

Some mammals have established Symbiotic relationships with a variety of other species. Here we have a young Impala, sharing a symbiotic relationship of mutualism, with a young Red-billed Oxpecker . Mutualism is where both parties positively benefit from the relationship. In this case, the Oxpecker feeds on the impalas Ectoparasites (gaining food), while at the same time, bad health and even Disease is reduced, in the Impala’s health, by the removal of these Ectoparasites.

In nature, it’s survival of the fittest.. Lions won’t tolerate injured or sick individuals. The pride would only be as strong as it’s weakest link. Therefore, they’ll usually kill or chase off weaker individuals, if it threatens the success of the pride. Here you’ll see one of the weaker Females which have been forced out of the Lubyelubye pride, within the region on Lower Sabie.

After good rains, and provided that clear weather is forecasted for at least a day ahead, Animals which are highly territorial, such as Lions and other Big Cats, would utilise this window, in order to re-enforce their boundaries. They will seem more active than usual, and they’ll be moving across their entire territory, scent marking and scrapping in order to leave their territorial markings on the boundaries of their territories. They do this to ensure that competitive individuals from the same species don’t enter their territory. Luckily, for us, animals usually use natural markers like rivers, fire-breaks and even roads as their natural boundary… enjoy!!

Lions are Africa’s only social cats, they live, operate and socialise in a group called a pride. The Females are responsible for the hunting, to provide food for the entire pride, but most importantly to keep the males fit, so they can successfully provide protection for the pride against other male lions.

Elephants are mixed feeders, generally selecting the most palatable and nutritious plants available in quantity. During the rainy season they concentrate on grasses and herbs, like this Sickle Bush (Dichrostachys Cinerea) or the young Round-Leaved Teak (Pterocarpus Rotundifolius) which we see here. They have 2 pairs of long, rasplike molars, which slide forward and backward, in a milling action, rather than side to side as in most herbivores. Do you notice how he scratches his ear, this is an indication that his emotion towards irritation is slowly increasing, then, do you notice how he shakes his head, this is a polite way of showing us, that we shouldn’t follow him… by respecting this Bulls space, we enjoyed this sighting within a respectable proximity.

How do you say HELLO?! Lions have a very intimate way of greeting each other, in a non-threatening display, it’s known as agonistic behaviour. Here you’ll see a young female greeting her mom, as she ascends the bank of the Shingwedzi Riverbed. They usually make head contact first, followed by rubbing their heads side-by-side, and followed through with a “side rub” to indicate compassion.

Of the 9 Species of Bee-Eaters which are found locally, these White-Fronted Bee-Eaters are more commonly sighted. These birds are colonial breeders , and courtship feeding occurs. Here you can witness a male bringing a potter wasp (Anterhynchium natalense) to his partner. They have pointed wings and dextrous, long tails, which enable fast and highly manoeuvrability in flight. They also have specially decurved bills which assist in unobstructed views when hunting flying insects in the air. Once they catch these stinging/venomous insects they are then squeezed or rubbed against a branch to remove the venom and sting.
