Due to demand we will be offering this outing again tomorrow (26/11)!

We're so excited to be heading out to look for the magnificent Golden Pipit, elusive Melodious Lark & rare Slaty Egret.

We will start off looking for the Golden Pipit near Albert Falls, spend about an hour here enjoying the birding in this fabulous area. Other species seen here recently include Lanner Falcon, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Acacia Pied Barbet, Red- throated Wryneck, White-winged Widowbird and many more.

We will then continue to Northern Estcourt to search for Melodious Lark. Melodious Lark is the key species here and has an amazing vocal repertoire, itโ€™s been recorded mimicking over 30 species of birds! This area is particularly active at the moment and species seen here recently include Secretarybird, Lesser Kestrel, Denhamโ€™s Bustard, Shelleyโ€™s Francolin, White-bellied Korhaan, Blue & Grey Crowned Cranes, Desert Cisticola and Cuckoo-finch amongst many others.

Following this weโ€™ll continue to look for the rare Slaty Egret.

Both the Golden Pipit & Slaty Egret are exceptionally rare in KZN so this is a great opportunity to hopefully connect with these special birds.

A pin for the meeting spot will be sent to you on confirmation of your booking.

If you are interested in booking a place on this bird walk, please contact David Hoddinott directly via Whatsapp on 072 3838463.

An exciting birding adventure awaits!

Join Rockjumpers expert guides as we roll up our sleeves and continue our exciting pelagic birding out of Durban.

South Africaโ€™s east coast offers some extremely rewarding birding and is one of the best locations to try and connect with the little known Barauโ€™s Petrel. These waters are largely unexplored and every pelagic has the potential to turn up something of utmost interest, whether it be a South African rarity or a provincial special.

Durban is an excellent location to see a number of true pelagic species such as Indian Yellow-nosed, Shy and Blackbrowed Albatrosses, White-chinned, Soft-plumaged, Pintado and Great-winged Petrels, Flesh-footed, Sooty, Great and Coryโ€™s Shearwaters, Antarctic Prion and Black-bellied, Wilsonโ€™s and European Storm Petrels. The list of rarities is long and this exciting aspect is a real drawcard for pelagic birding in this area. Gems like Wandering and Sooty Albatrosses, Grey and Tahiti Petrels, Streaked and Tropical Shearwaters, White-faced and Leachโ€™s Storm Petrels, Sooty Tern, Red-footed and Brown B***y, Red-tailed Tropicbird and many others have all turned up over the years.

We enjoyed the most fabulous day at the incredible Ihlanze Game Reserve (Karkloof spa), near Otto's Bluff on Saturday. It was a full days outing from dawn to dusk and we managed to record 150 species! (a fabulous count considering many migrants have not arrived).

Some of the notable highlights were absolutely phenomenal views of the magnificent Half-collared Kingfisher, a splendid calling Narina Trogon, African Finfoot (seen by a lucky few), obliging African Rail, cute endemic Swee Waxbill, many Southern Bald Ibis, a splendid perched Peregrine Falcon, elusive Southern Tchagra, lovely Knysna Turaco, Black-winged Lapwing with chick, African Snipe, Olive Bushshrike, Grey Cuckooshrike, Groundscraper Thrush, White-starred Robin and a fabulous Grey Sunbird posing.

We also enjoyed numerous mammal sightings included herds of African Buffalo, many giraffe, Common Warthog, Hippopotamus, Nyala & Kudu amongst others.

What a day! We can't wait for the next outing there on 16 October.

This past Friday afternoon we enjoyed a prolific birding outing to the grasslands and wetlands at the edge of the Cedara Agricultural College just west of Hilton, Pietermaritzburg. The weather was perfect and we were treated to unbeatable views of three very tricky species, namely: African Grass and Marsh Owls and a very obliging pair of Red-chested Flufftail.

Other noteworthy sightings included the localised Cape Grassbird, endemic Drakensberg Prinia, handsome Jackal Buzzard, Black Sparrowhawk, African Harrier-Hawk, Natal Spurfowl and African Reed Warbler among many others.
