PRESS RELEASE

Gareth Gehlig joins team LIR

Pretoria 9th March 2020: Fellow Capetonian Gareth Gehlig will join Lance Isaacs for the second round of the SA SBK Championship this weekend at Zwartkops Raceway. It’s needless to say that both riders will compete on the BMW S1000RR.

“Team LIR was established to be a multi rider team and in the recent past, we have successfully done so” Lance Isaacs explains. “Harry Timmerman was our last rider who claimed the 2018 Bridgestone Thunderbike class on the BMW S1000RR.”

Gareth who competed in the Super 600 class last year was already contemplating the move up to the Superbike class. “We were in talks with Team LIR for some time and it was just a matter of finding the funding to make the switch to the SBK class.”

18-year-old Gareth has already built up some National experience and has 41 races under his belt. For the upcoming race Gehlig will be racing the 2019 BMW S1000RR on which Lance came second in the championship. “We know this bike inside-out and it has shown that it is a very competitive bike for Gareth to start his campaign.”

Team engineer Dean Ferreira in the meantime has been working around the clock on the new 2020 BMW S1000RR of Lance. In the opening round it showed enormous potential and the team has now entered the phase of opening Pandora’s Box. “The S1000RR was fast right out of the box and the possibilities are endless. We have started to put on the Go-Fast parts on the bike, which were simply not available yet in South Africa. This is the first step in making it a more race comfortable bike for Lance. Alongside we have started with the different set-up options and it’s now a matter of applying and testing them on the track.”

“These first few races will be about learning the bike, but with the aim of winning races from the moment go. We came close on our inaugural win at the opening round and I feel comfortable that we can step-up our game again in the coming weekend.” Lance elaborates.

“In the three practice sessions on Friday (13th March) we will keep developing the BMW S1000RR. It suits us perfectly that we return to Zwartkops Raceway for the second round, as we have a good reference point for the machine. The works that have been done on the bike and the mileage we’ve put on should give us an extra edge over the first race that was already successful.”

“I am extremely excited to take the S1000RR to the next level and I am confident that we will have a good shot at victory this weekend. For Gareth it’s going to be a learning curve in the first few races. The move from a 600cc to a 1000cc is significant and that will take some time. But, we have a perfect understanding of the bike and the set-up possibilities that he will have the best possible chance to become successful.”

Friday the SA SBK series will have one free practice and two qualifying sessions. Saturday (14th March) the day starts with warm up followed by two 12 lap races.”
