We are going on walkabout to Cairns in north-eastern tropical Australia for 9 weeks, visiting our family. I will continue to post Bird of the Day, maybe salting in an occasional exceptional Aus bird. But the South African images will continue as a daily offering. From Monday, and for three days of travel, I will schedule postings without comment, until we arrive. Happy days.

Bird of the Day. As easy as it gets - 2 images of our now human-adapted geese. So a different slant today - making the familiar new. 'Our' pair now feed at our feeding station 7m away even when we are in plain sight. The male (single image, and at the back in the photo) is easily identifiable by his thicker neck - also he hisses whilst she honks. Incredibly, they can easily pick up individual small round bird seed with their bills, eating more than one a second. She is bolder, feeding at about twice the rate that h does; and he follows ever-alert. They are always in close attendance; very seldom more than 3-4m away.

Why go Birding with Aldo?

Aldo is a qualified Ornithologist with a PhD in Ornithology.

For 54 years, birds and birding have been integral to Aldoโ€™s life, beginning with birdwatching 1967. Post-school, his university training soon focused on birds, leading to research on birds of the Southern Ocean and an MSc from the University of Cape Town, whilst working for the Fitzpatrick Institute on albatrosses at Marion Island.

Whilst his professional career as a bird researcher developed, he continued to develop his birding interests, leading to the first Southern African guide on where to find birds called โ€˜Where to Watch Birds in Southern Africaโ€™ with Ian Sinclair. He ran his birding courses for summer schools at the Universities of Cape Town and Natal, and has given hundreds of popular talks and presentations over the years. He authored a popular book title โ€˜Discovering Birdsโ€™.

Aldo worked for the Sea Fisheries Research Institute from 1981-1988, where he worked on seabirds of the Western Cape, obtaining a Doctorate. In 1988, he moved to the Durban Museum of Natural Science, following which he successfully brought the 22nd International Ornithological Congress to Durban, with more than 1000 international visitors, and with an accompanying popular programme for the broader birding community in Southern Africa. .
